Career Opportunities in India after PhD

A PhD or Doctor of Philosophy is the highest academic qualification offered to an individual following a course of study. The term PhD originates from the Latin term ‘Philosophiae Doctor’ and represents competition of individual research in a field of interest. The doctoral research degree paves the path for a wide range of opportunities. It is a 3 to 8 years course that helps you become competent at presenting your thesis based on independent research of a topic.

There is a breadth of skills students acquire while pursuing a PhD. It elevates your ability to critically analyse a subject, display intellectual maturity, gain in-depth knowledge of a specific field and publish a valid thesis.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the best job opportunities after PhD that are available to students in different industries—academia, government sector, entrepreneurship, consultancy, and so on. If you are looking for PhD admission for 2024, please read further.

What is the career outlook for PhD holders in 2024?

Based on my experience and insights, job opportunities after phd in india appear promising in 2024. Their advanced research and analytical skills are in high demand across various sectors. In academia, opportunities abound as they can pursue careers as professors or researchers. The corporate sector offers avenues for success in roles related to research and development, data science, and consulting. Government agencies value their expertise in policy analysis and implementation. Additionally, for those inclined towards entrepreneurship and innovation, there are opportunities to venture into new territories. Overall, the year 2024 presents an encouraging landscape for PhD holders in India, offering diverse career paths and the potential to make meaningful contributions in their respective fields.

Top Job Opportunities after PhD

1. Academics

a. Faculty Position

One of the most commonly opted choices after a PhD is teaching, primarily due to the uncanny similarity between academia and what an individual must do to acquire the degree. The degree practice and teaching involve teaching, researching, and nurturing your acquired knowledge.

If you are interested in landing a faculty position or taking up the teaching path, plenty of institutions are keen on having a PhD holder in their faculty, especially in developing countries.

The PhD holders have a niche of their own in the domain or topic they have spent time researching about. They have made a good number of contributions to the field of study, so they have a firm hold on the subject.

So the PhD holders as faculty seem to be a natural fit, as they can impart the knowledge mentioned in the curriculum and much beyond that. They can open their students’ minds to concepts they would not usually be exposed to and thus help them develop a frame of mind that is inquisitive and has a strong foundation.

Some of the skills that the faculty must possess to impart the education smoothly are an excellent hold of the subject, communication skills, analytical skills, people management, understanding of human behavior, assessment skills, empathy, etc.

The profession of teaching is considered one of the best, high paying and most successful one. The compensation varies according to the subject, institution, experience, etc. On average, after PhD salary in India of a faculty is  12.0 lakhs per annum. The average salary bracket ranges from 1.3 lakhs per annum to 30.0 lakhs per annum (Source).

b. Post Doctorate

You can also choose to stay in the same university for varying periods (from one to four years) and get an extended project based on the one you did earlier. You might also work on publishing your erstwhile researched product.

The significance of a post-doctorate is many. They take on individual or group research projects that are impactful. Their research and findings help society, government education, industries, etc.

A post-doc has the autonomy of their day. Some of the skills that are required from a post-doc are the nature of being inquisitive, research skills, documentation, verbal and written communication, a good hold of the subject matter, people skills, team management, etc.

The salary for a post-doc may vary depending on factors such as the institution, domain, research topic, experience, etc. On average, a postdoctoral researcher procures the compensation of 10.0 lakhs per annum. The salary ranges from 3.0 lakhs per annum to 40.0 lakhs per annum (Source). People have apprehension about “What comes after PhD?” Post-doctorate can be considered an option.

c. Adjunct Position

An adjunct position is a non-tenure position in universities; they are professionals who don’t carry the title of a professor but make valuable contributions to the faculty. In some universities, professionals in Adjunct positions work overtime and bear numerous educational responsibilities.

d. Teaching

PhD holders can teach at institutions offering undergraduate courses where they are looking for staff with a PhD who can carry out practical research.

PhD candidates can be assistant professors by teaching undergraduate courses or being a part of committees that help form academic and organisational policies and perform research to achieve tenure.

There exists a myth that PhD courses are designed to PAVE the path for individuals to become professors at the university level. However, the horizons of a PhD degree spread farther than simply academia, so it’s wrong to assume so.

Here’s looking at the different verticals where PhD holders can chart a rewarding career.

As a working professional, if you are looking at adding Doctor title to your name, we would recommend DBA over PhD. A DBA program allows you to do the same and has a flexible industry-oriented approach rather than an academic approach taken by PhD. However, DBA won’t help you to earn a professor title at a UGC-approved institution since that will require a PhD.

They find ample opportunities in academia, securing coveted positions as professors and researchers. Moreover, industries such as healthcare, finance, and technology highly value PhDs, often offering them lucrative roles in research and development, data analysis, and leadership.

How to Transition from Manager to Strategist – Why the Doctorate of Business Administration is your Gate Pass to the C-Suite

There’s a stark difference between being a manager and a strategist. Many people dream of entering the C-suite but don’t know how to achieve the same. This article will throw light on how you can achieve this dream and explain why it’s worth the effort. We’ll explore the reasons why you should transition from manager to strategist first and then delve deeper into how to become a strategist in India:  Why Make the Transition From Manager to Strategist Transitioning from manager to strategist might seem like a herculean task to some people. After all, such a transition requires effort, dedication, and commitment. However, there are many reasons why you should focus on making this transition. 1. Better Growth Prospects Every promotion opens new doors of opportunity. The same is true for becoming a strategist from being a manager. Such a transition will advance your career to a new level and give you a ton of new opportunities. Having new opportunities can help you plan your career better and make smarter decisions regarding your future. You’d be able to network with business leaders, make bigger decisions, and handle more responsibilities once you enter the C-suite.  2. New Role, New Challenges You can’t grow professionally if you don’t face new challenges. If working as a manager seems easy to you and you want to take on novel issues, you should pursue this role. As a strategist, you’ll be facing new challenges and developing solutions for the same. It would allow you to develop both professionally and personally as you’ll be exploring new domains and taking on different aspects of the business.  If you like to have a little zing in your life, you must focus on becoming a strategist.  3. Welcome to the New Era in Business Education – Doctor of Business Administration

Every industry evolves with time and business education is no different. The new challenges of our data-driven world require a more experienced and knowledgeable professional to tackle them.  This means the traditional MBA might not be sufficient for all business roles. That’s why the demand for doctor of business administration professionals has started rising.  In the following points, we’ll make you acquainted with what is a doctorate in business administration and why it’s getting popular:  What is a Doctorate in Business Administration? A doctorate in business administration or DBA in short is an advanced program for management professionals who want to take a step further and become experts in their domains.  Keep in mind that a DBA is different from a PhD in Management as their demographics, motivation, skills outcome and format vary vastly. A DBA is for working professionals with prior experience who strive for growth. DBA courses aim to help the candidate frame and communicate research findings towards problem-solving applications.  A doctorate in business administration focuses on helping you get a deeper understanding of your chosen field and become a domain expert in the same.  It allows you to solve practical problems in your field by enhancing your knowledge base and enhancing your ability to combine different ideas and innovate.  To answer the question “What is a doctorate in business administration”, you should look at the following features of a DBA program:  A DBA program focuses on the use of others’ research to solve real-world business problems.  It usually has core requirements, a research component, electives and a final project such as a short booklet, peer-reviewed journal articles or a dissertation project. The dissertation project is a must to complete a DBA as it allows you to demonstrate your advanced knowledge and prove that you’re adding to the body of knowledge. Most people who take a DBA program are working professionals so the program should be part-time and flexible instead of requiring the student to leave their job for studies. A proper DBA program will equip its students with the ability to conduct quality research and develop advanced skills related to crucial domains such as communication and technology.   Why Get a Doctor of Business Administration There are many benefits to joining a DBA program. The following are the most prominent ones amongst them:  Stand out Among the Competition Having a DBA will help you stand out among the numerous MBA professionals. In the current highly competitive industry, being able to stand out from your peers will put you at a great advantage.  First, it ensures that you can easily bag senior roles in your organization. Companies prefer having a domain expert in a senior role, and with a DBA qualification, you’d be a suitable candidate.  Having a DBA shows that you’re dedicated to professional and personal growth. DBA graduates take the edge over MBA graduates as they are rare and more qualified.  Specialize in your Field If you’re interested in learning more about your specific domain, then getting a DBA will help you a lot. DBA courses are made to help a candidate learn the advanced concepts of their chosen field and become a thought leader in that sector.  These courses focus on helping you specialize in your field by helping you develop a deeper understanding of that field’s different aspects. Reputed DBA programs offer multiple specializations. For example, upGrad’s DBA program offers specializations in numerous sectors such as Machine Learning, Data Science, Finance, Technology Entrepreneurship, Business Analytics, and many others.  An In-Demand Qualification Not many people have heard of a doctor of business administration program. So you can understand just how few people are actually pursuing a DBA program currently. It’s a highly advanced program and requires the candidate to have ample work experience and knowledge of their field.  Due to these reasons, there’s a shortage of DBA professionals in the market. There’s a global demand for professionals that have this qualification. Companies want highly specialized and experienced management professionals who can help them solve the complicated business problems of modern industries and accelerate their growth.  Phenomenal Pay According to PayScale, the average pay for a doctorate in business administration professional is INR 26.77 lakh per annum. In contrast, the average MBA salary in India is around INR 7 lakh per annum. This means the average pay of a DBA professional is nearly four times the average pay of an MBA professional.    If you want a better paycheck and enhance your financial prospects, getting a doctor of business administration would be the best thing to do. You’ll become eligible for senior management roles in different organizations once you have a DBA qualification such as Senior Marketing Manager, Information Security Manager, CEO, etc.  Succeed in your Business Maybe you aren’t interested in attracting employers but want to start your own business. Completing a DBA course will teach you the latest business and management skills you need to run a business. You will be an expert in your industry, which will help you solve your business’s problems quickly and effectively. It would also help you make better-informed decisions and organize the different departments of your business efficiently.  Not only does a DBA program make you a specialist in a domain, but it also makes you familiar with the advanced concepts of business and management. Another added advantage is that you wouldn’t have any difficulties in attracting investors to your company. Investors and stakeholders would trust you more than your competitors due to your qualification and domain knowledge.  Conclusion At upGrad, we offer a Global Doctor of Business Administration program with the Swiss School of Business Management, Geneva. Top 5 Reasons for a Doctorate in Business Management

Why get a doctorate in business management?  There’s a point in every professional’s career where they wonder what they can do to grow professionally. If you’re in management and are wondering the same thing, then the best way to go forward is to obtain a doctorate degree in business management.  Not only will a DBA open many doors of opportunities for you, but it will also help you become competent management professional.  Why Pursue a Doctorate in Business Management? A doctorate in business management is among the best courses for professionals who aspire to reach the topmost level in management. So, let’s take a look at the top 5 reasons why you should pursue a doctorate in business management.  1. Get a Higher Pay First and foremost, having a doctorate in business management can boost your income potential by a considerable margin. The average pay of an MBA professional in India is INR 7.79 lakh per annum. On the other hand, the average pay for a DBA professional in India is INR 26 lakh per annum, which is around 3.5 times higher than an MBA.  Keep in mind that we have only shared the average pay for this field. Your pay can go much higher in the industry, depending on your location, employer, experience, and skills. The reason why they pay for this field is considerably higher is because the supply for DBA professionals is substantially lower than MBA professionals. However, the demand for skilled professionals with a doctorate in business management is significantly high.  In any industry, your pay depends on your skills and expertise. And when you have an advanced qualification like DBA, you will be considered the most skilled professionals in this league. 2. Expand Your Horizon After getting a doctorate in business management, not only will you get higher pay, but you will also be eligible for senior roles in different companies.  Bagging high-level executive roles in your desired companies will be a much easier task for you as you’d be an expert in management with a specialisation in a particular subject.    3. Stand Out Unlike other programs, a DBA is usually pursued by experienced executives and workers who already have an MBA and professional experience. Such professionals choose to pursue a DBA either because they want to become a more skilled expert in that field or wish to distinguish themselves from the rest of the competition. Not only does a DBA show that you’re an expert in your industry, but it also signifies that you’re committed to growing professionally and personally with a willingness to go the extra mile.  Furthermore, when you get a doctorate in business management, you’ll stand out from your peers as you’d be more qualified and knowledgeable than the rest.  4. Stay Updated With so many new technologies entering the market, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, it can be quite challenging to stay up to date with them. However, it’s also true that professionals who keep up with the technological changes get ahead in the market, while those who fail to do so become obsolete. A prominent reason why you should consider doing a doctorate in business management is that it will make you familiar with the latest skills and technologies. Our Global Doctor of Business Administration offers specialisations in multiple sectors, including Data Science, Business Analytics, Finance, Machine Learning, Technology Entrepreneurship, and Supply Chain Management, among others.  Staying updated with the latest trends in the market will help you get ahead of your peers and become a thought leader in your industry.  5. Professional and Academic What separates a doctorate of management from other doctorate programs is that it’s both a professional and academic qualification.  Most doctorate programs are academic qualifications that allow a person only to pursue research and academic progress. On the other hand, with a DBA, you have the option of applying your sophisticated knowledge of management and relevant fields in business directly and help an organisation grow accordingly.  That doesn’t mean you can’t pursue academic progress with a doctorate in management too. You can certainly conduct research and publish papers in journals in your specialised field if you’re interested.  You can also use your advanced understanding of business concepts to start your own company and become an entrepreneur. There aren’t many degrees and qualifications that offer such a plethora of growth opportunities – a perfect ground for getting a doctorate in business management.  How to Get a Doctorate in Business Management Certainly, getting a doctorate in business management has its advantages. What is the difference between a doctorate (PhD) and a DBA?

What is the difference between a doctorate (PhD) and a DBA?

You might already have several years of work experience and a postgraduate degree. Perhaps even an MBA. How do you then stand out from the crowd in a rapidly changing world and prove to employers that you are the right one to hire? You can show your extensive work history or your track record. You could ask your network for recommendations. You could gain skills and certifications or a degree that’s even more prestigious than an MBA. If you choose the latter, you could go down the route of a PhD, spend some years doing research and come up with your own unique theory and framework. Or, you could do a DBA. What is the difference between a PhD and a DBA? A Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD), is a type of a doctorate degree, and perhaps the most common doctorate awarded. It can be awarded in almost any subject and is achieved after three to four years of full-time research or five to seven years of part time research culminating in the presentation of a new theory or idea in the field.  A Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), on the other hand, is a specialised doctorate in Business. It requires the student to undertake research to present solutions to problems, often ones that they’ve experienced within their own businesses or places of employment. While a PhD is most suited to academics, a DBA keeps working professionals in mind, even though there can be some crossover between both. Both of the degrees award a Doctorate upon completion and are equal in rank, title and prestige.  Should I do a DBA or a PhD? A PhD can be in any field. It is purely research based, and extensive time will be spent developing a new idea or framework where there is a gap in existing knowledge. It is especially suited towards academics or aspiring academics. A DBA on the other hand is tailored towards business professionals with some work experience who want to move up within an organisation and break into management positions.  Coursework is a combination of taught components and research. A student will combine scientific research, theory and professional experience to work on a business problem in an area such as leadership, decision-making, global change etc. What qualifications do I need for a DBA or a PhD? A PhD often requires a Master’s degree or an M.Phil, particularly if it’s a PhD in an arts or humanities field. Admissions criteria are different depending on the institution, but a key part of the PhD admissions process is finding a supervisor with expertise in or doing research in the area that you’d like to study. A DBA, surprisingly, depending on the institution, can be done straight after a Bachelor’s with some work experience. You could potentially skip the time and cost of an MBA or a Master’s degree entirely! How will a DBA or a PhD affect my career progression? A PhD, being a more academic degree, is better suited to someone who would like to develop process and policy, or even teach, particularly in a research or academic institution. Read more about the career opportunities after PhD in India. A DBA with its practical, problem-solving nature, often attracts management or aspiring candidates hoping to break into top level management positions within the field of business.  Due to this, it’s likely that a DBA holder will trend towards higher paid upper-level management jobs within businesses and corporations. Deciding between a DBA or a PhD depends hugely on your individual circumstances and what you want to achieve in your future career. As a working professional, if you are looking at adding a Doctor title to your name, we would recommend DBA over PhD. A DBA program allows you to do the same and has a flexible industry-oriented approach rather than an academic approach taken by PhD. However, DBA won’t help you to earn a professor title at a UGC-approved institution since that will require a PhD. Here’s why we think the SSBM DBA degree powered by upGrad is a great choice for driven executives. How can business and tech leaders acquire a doctorate and get a ‘Dr.’ prefix before one’s name?

How can business and tech leaders acquire a doctorate and get a ‘Dr.’ prefix before one’s name?

We were attending a conference of business leaders in Germany when I noticed a curious thing. Of the 50 odd CXOs and senior management folks I met during the conference; a vast majority introduced themselves with a Dr. prefix before their name. When I enquired about this to a colleague in the Berlin office who also had a doctorate, she explained to me how Doctorate is seen as the highest level of expertise a person can have in their field of employment in Germany and Western Europe. Even more curious, I asked her why a business leader or a tech leader spends so much of their energy getting a doctorate; isn’t that for academicians? She laughed and told me that it is just one of the ways to get a ‘Dr’ prefix before one’s name! For an economy over-indexed towards specialization and a nation obsessed with perfection, there is no better way to signal one’s expertise and climb the echelons of a corporate career than getting a doctorate. The truth is that there are multiple ways of acquiring a doctorate degree for business and tech leaders. It is through a DBA or Doctor of Business Administration, which is the preferred route since one can easily pursue a DBA while working.  Universities across Europe offer DBAs since there are so many takers and have hence created a curriculum that can be managed alongside one’s tight schedule at work. Internationally accepted and common ways of pursuing a doctorate world over include Ph.D.: Doctor of Philosophy, DBA: Doctor of Business Administration, EdD: Doctor of Education, MD: Doctor of Medicine, and EngD: Doctor of Engineering. Germany, every year, churns out 29,000 doctorates and the vast majority of them join their industry. It is this pedigree of leaders with deep thinking ability and an eye for detail that ensures that the German industry and businesses are high on innovation. In fact, Berlin has one of the most dynamic startup cultures in Europe with companies making a global impact. Interestingly the German & European education systems have figured out ways of letting people enter the employment phase early, while allowing them to upskill in parallel pursuing Master’s and Doctorate while working. This is where a DBA or Doctorate in Business Administration becomes a phenomenal idea. Multiple top Universities across Europe- especially the UK, Germany, and Switzerland have started offering DBA to business and tech leaders and ones aspiring to be one, allowing them to super specialize in their domains. Individual doctorate programs which have a combination of thesis and instruction led curriculum ensures one can pursue the program in the subject one is already working on and hence reducing the additional pressure. Another best part is that these programs have evolved to majorly online, allowing even international students to pursue the same. Such an idea will be greatly beneficial to our country where we have so much of a dearth of highly qualified people, not because of the lack of energy or enterprise but just the lack of options. With DBA degree courses available on online platforms like ours, make it easily accessible and offer a good return on investment as compared to an offline degree. This course is carefully designed for working professionals who are looking for a transition into the C-suite and senior management roles while looking at becoming experts in their domain of choice. The professional doctorate degree also allows candidates to practice in the field and advance to leadership positions. With the help of such online DBA programs, India can also have an increased number of Doctors from business and tech-driven roles who have the coveted ‘Dr.’ title to their name in record time. As a nation, our strength is our people, the best human resource available across the world who can solve complex problems in record time. All we need to do is to arm them further with courses and opportunities like this that are on par with other western countries.
