The passport is the only official ID accepted for the IELTS exam. It is checked before you enter the IELTS test room and again during the speaking test. Without your passport, you will not be allowed to sit for the exam.

Your passport will be verified by the IELTS test staff before you enter the exam room. The IELTS Speaking Examiner will also check it again before your speaking test begins.

In this article, you will learn whether a passport is required for the IELTS exam, and what to do if you don’t have one.

Why is a Passport Required for the IELTS Exam?

IELTS has strict identification guidelines. The only form of identification accepted at the IELTS test center is your passport. It is used for confirming your identity at the time of registration and again on the IELTS test day. The IELTS staff will compare your passport photo with your appearance in person. This helps ensure that the person taking the test is the same person who registered.

The details in your passport—name, photo, date of birth—are matched with the information you entered when registering for the exam. The IELTS staff also takes your photo and verifies your identity using your passport on the test day.

You must carry the same passport you used when filling out your IELTS application. Your passport will be checked before the listening, reading, writing, and speaking tests. This is part of the official guidelines followed by all IELTS centers.

No other document is allowed in place of it. The IELTS test body does not accept national ID cards, Aadhaar cards, driving licenses, or any other regional documents in place of a passport.

Is a Passport Mandatory for Everyone?

Yes, it is mandatory for all IELTS candidates to carry their passports on the day of the exam. It does not matter if you are taking the IELTS in your own country or another country. Other forms of ID, such as an Aadhaar card, a driving license, or a student ID, are not accepted.

You must upload a clear scanned copy of your passport when you register for the IELTS. Make sure the passport remains valid at least until the date of your speaking test. The same passport should be brought with you on the exam day.

What Happens If I Don’t Have a Passport?

If you don’t have a passport at the time of registration, you will not be able to complete your application. The IELTS test platform requires you to enter passport details and upload a clear scanned copy of the passport during sign-up.

If you lose your passport before the exam date, you must notify your IELTS test center immediately. You may be allowed to update your ID, but only if the new passport is issued before the test. Without a valid passport, entry to the test room will be denied.

If you arrive at the test center without your passport, you will not be allowed to take the test. The IELTS staff will not make any exceptions, even if you bring a different ID. You may also lose your exam fee if you fail to show a valid ID on the day of the test.

If your passport is expired or under renewal, you should not attend the test. Wait until your new passport is issued and valid, and then reschedule your IELTS exam. IELTS centers do not accept soft copies, expired passports, or handwritten documents.

IELTS Special Considerations: Changes to Passport or ID

If you have changed or renewed your passport after registering for the IELTS exam, you must inform the IELTS test center as soon as possible. You may be required to carry both your old and new passports on test day.

Any mismatch between your registration document and your actual ID can cause issues. If your name, photo, or passport number has changed, make sure you update the IELTS provider in advance.

Make sure to:

  • Notify your test center before test day
  • Submit proof of change (renewal or update)
  • Bring both old and new passports (if applicable)
