GMAT Exam Pattern

The GMAT has 64 questions across three sections and takes 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete. Your total GMAT score can range from 205 to 805. 

The three sections are: 

• Quantitative Reasoning – 45 minutes 
• Verbal Reasoning – 45 minutes 
• Data Insights – 45 minutes 

Total Test Time: 2 hours and 15 minutes

GMAT Exam Pattern by Section 

The GMAT exam pattern and syllabus are divided into 3 sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. All these sections assess different skills.  

The GMAT exam question pattern also differs by section, so the type of question you will find will be different across all the 3 sections.  

Now, let us understand this in detail:  

GMAT Quantitative Reasoning Exam Pattern 

Quantitative Reasoning has only Problem Solving questions. You will mainly work with arithmetic and algebra, but the questions also check how well you can reason through a problem. 

A calculator isn't allowed in this section.

GMAT Verbal Reasoning Exam Pattern 

In the verbal reasoning exam section of the GMAT exam, you will get Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions. 

Some questions out of 23 will be based on the longer passages, while others may present you with a short argument and ask you to understand or judge the reasoning behind it.

GMAT Data Insights Exam Pattern 

Data Insights is where you work with information in different forms. You may get a table, graph, or data from more than one source, and then answer questions based on it.  

Some questions also ask you to check whether the information given is enough to solve the problem. 

You can use an on-screen calculator in this section.

Data Insights has 20 questions in 45 minutes. The questions can involve quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, data analysis, or a mix of these.

GMAT Exam Scoring Pattern 

Your GMAT result is shown in two ways. You get one total score from 205 to 805, and you also get a separate score for each section.  

Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights are each scored from 60 to 90.

Total GMAT Score	205–805

All three sections have the same weight in your total score. But there is one thing to understand here, you cannot simply add the three section scores and call that your final GMAT score. 

Suppose you get: 

• Quantitative Reasoning: 81 
• Verbal Reasoning: 77 
• Data Insights: 80 

If you add them, it becomes 238. But 238 is not your GMAT total score. These are only your section scores.  

GMAC uses your performance across all three sections and then gives you a separate total score on the 205–805 scale. 

There isn't a simple formula published by GMAC that you can use to convert these section scores into the final total yourself.
