PTE Exam Pattern

The PTE Academic is a fully computer-based test that takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes. Your performance is scored on a scale of 10 to 90. The PTE exam pattern is divided into three sections: Speaking & Writing (76–84 minutes), Reading (22–30 minutes), and Listening (31–39 minutes). 

Depending on the question, you may have to speak into a microphone, type your answer, choose from given options, or listen to an audio recording and respond. So, the format changes quite a bit as you move from one section to another. 

In the sections below, we will learn all about PTE exam pattern, section-wise question format, scoring pattern, and the changes you should know for 2026. 

Latest PTE Exam Pattern 2026 

If you are taking the PTE Test in 2026, you will have three sections, which are Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening. The test is computer-based and takes around 2 hours. 

There are 22 question types in total, spread across these three sections. The time given for each section is different, as you can see below:

PTE Exam Pattern by Section 

The 3 PTE sections don’t follow the same format. Speaking & Writing is the longest part, while Reading and Listening are shorter and have their own question types. So, here is what you’ll get in each one. 

PTE Speaking and Writing Exam Pattern 

This is the first part of the test and takes around 76–84 minutes. You’ll get 9 question types here.  

Before these questions begin, you’ll also give a Personal Introduction, but Pearson doesn’t score it.

PTE Reading Exam Pattern 

The PTE Reading Test section comes next. You’ll have around 23–30 minutes and 5 types of questions.  

Some are straightforward multiple-choice questions, while others ask you to fill gaps or put parts of a paragraph in the right order.

PTE Listening Exam Pattern 

PTE Listening test is the last part and takes around 31–39 minutes. There are 8 question types.  

You’ll hear each audio or video clip only once, so you can take notes while listening.

PTE Exam Scoring Pattern 

In PTE Academic, 90 is the highest score and 10 is the lowest. Your score report will show one overall score, plus separate scores for Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. 

Here is how your PTE scores and results are divided:

Your overall score is not just an average of the four skill scores. This is because some questions check more than one skill at the same time. So, your answer to one question may add to more than one skill score. 

Also, not every question is marked in the same way. For some, your answer is either right or wrong. For others, you can get partial marks.

Changes in PTE Exam Pattern 2026 

There hasn’t been a separate major PTE format change announced for 2026. The pattern you will follow in 2026 includes the updates Pearson brought in from 7 August 2025. 

So, here are the latest 2025 changes:

For 2026, the main thing to remember is that these updates continue to apply. There hasn’t been another major change to the overall test structure.

The PTE exam pattern is mainly about understanding how the three sections work, how much time you get, and the type of questions that come in each part. Once you know this, the test becomes much easier to plan for, especially because some questions test more than one skill at the same time.
