Frequently Asked Questions

Is it mandatory to apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO) for all UCD undergraduate programs?

If you are eligible for EU, EFTA, UK, or Swiss fee status, you must apply through the CAO system for first-year undergraduate entry. However, international students classified as Non-EU applicants are required to apply directly through UCD’s dedicated online application portal, not via CAO.

Do international students need a residence permit or GNIB registration after arriving in Dublin?

Yes. All non‑EU/EEA/Swiss/UK students must first complete UCD registration, then register in person at Burgh Quay to obtain an Irish Residence Permit (IRP), replacing the former GNIB card. The €300 (INR 30K) fee applies, and renewals are online thereafter.

Are there orientation sessions specifically designed for new international students at UCD?

Yes. UCD Global runs a specific international orientation programme from September 3–5, including airport welcome, peer‑mentor campus tours, UCard collection, immigration briefings, social mixers, cultural trips, plus ongoing virtual and in-person events throughout early term.

Can international students at UCD work part-time during their studies?

Yes. Non‑EU/EEA/Swiss/UK students with valid Stamp 2 may work up to 20 hours weekly during term, and up to 40 hours weekly during break periods (June–September, 15 December–15 January). A PPS number is also required.

What is the typical timeline of application processing at University College Dublin?

UCD processes applications on a rolling basis, issuing decisions typically within 4–6 weeks for undergraduate and graduate taught programmes after a complete application is received. Doctoral programme outcomes usually arrive within 2–3 weeks (5–6 weeks in summer).

Is there a late arrival policy at University College Dublin in case of student visa delays?

Yes. UCD Res Services allows onsite check‑in aligned with residence licence dates, early or late arrivals must be cleared in advance via email. Contact UCD Residences if visa issues delay arrival and they’ll advise on accommodation and arrival permissions.

Are there any cultural training or integration sessions offered to help students settle into Irish life?

Yes. UCD Smurfit Business School includes an Intercultural Development Programme (ICD) for all 1,200+ postgraduate students, developing intercultural competence through workshops, reflection, and peer-led integration events. Additionally, UCD Global delivers cultural adjustment support via workshops and events.

Can I request a course change after arriving at UCD if I’m not satisfied with my initial choice?

Yes, you can. Course change requests must be submitted via the UCD Registrar’s Office by early October for undergraduates and early in the first semester for graduates. Acceptance depends on course availability, academic performance, and faculty approval.

How does UCD stand against top universities in the USA, Canada, and UK?

UCD ranks #118 in the 2026 QS World University Rankings and is #1 in Ireland. It lies within the top 9% globally, competing with top institutions in the USA, Canada, and UK.

How safe is the UCD campus and the surrounding Dublin area for international students?

UCD campus provides 24/7 security presence with CCTV, patrols, emergency phones, and the Walk Safe escort service. Students report rare incidents; campus watch encourages community vigilance. Surrounding Dublin suburbs are generally safe, though usual urban safety precautions apply.

Do I need to register with Irish authorities separately after enrolling at UCD?

Yes. All non-EU/EEA/Swiss/UK students studying over 90 days must register their immigration permission at Burgh Quay within 90 days of entry. You’ll receive an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card, valid for up to one year, with a €300 (INR 30K) fee.
