TOEFL Exam Syllabus

By upGrad Abroad Team

Share:

The TOEFL exam syllabus evaluates academic English proficiency across four core sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, with the test taking approximately two hours to complete.

From January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT uses an updated format with shorter task types, a multistage adaptive test experience and a new 1–6 scoring scale. The current test takes about two hours, although the exact number of items and timing can vary because the test adapts to the test taker's performance. So, when checking the TOEFL exam pattern and syllabus, make sure you're looking at the 2026 format rather than older guides based on the previous test.

TOEFL Reading Syllabus

The reading part of the TOEFL exam tests your comprehension of English in day-to-day campus settings and academic situations. Rather than the older format, which was mostly based on long extracts from textbooks, the new version of the test makes use of shorter texts and tasks.

Complete the Words

In this task, you complete partially missing words in a short text. It tests both vocabulary knowledge and your ability to understand what a word should be from the context.

You should focus on:

  • Vocabulary
  • Word forms
  • Meaning from context
  • Spelling and language patterns

ETS says this task is designed to test how well you process written text for both meaning and form

Read in Daily Life

This task uses short texts from everyday situations, such as notices, messages and brief informational material that you may come across in a campus environment.

The main skills include:

  • Identifying main ideas
  • Finding key details
  • Understanding implied meaning
  • Interpreting practical information

The texts are short and focused, and ETS says you don't need prior knowledge of the topic to answer the questions.

Read an Academic Passage

This task uses a short academic passage similar to the type of reading you may encounter in a university course.

You should be comfortable with:

  • Identifying main ideas
  • Finding supporting details
  • Understanding vocabulary in context
  • Understanding relationships between ideas

The focus is on comprehension rather than specialist knowledge, so you don't need to know the academic subject beforehand.

TOEFL Listening Syllabus

The updated syllabus of the Listening module is an assessment of your capacity to understand English speech in today’s learning environment. It includes short recordings of audio that are based on campus scenarios, conversations, and academic lectures.

Listen and Choose a Response

You hear a spoken prompt and select the most appropriate response. The task checks whether you can understand the meaning and intent of spoken English and recognise common patterns used in academic settings.

Listen to a Conversation

This task focuses mainly on campus-life conversations. You'll need to follow what the speakers are saying and understand both the main point and smaller details.

The key skills include:

  • Identifying main ideas
  • Finding key details
  • Understanding speaker intent
  • Making inferences

Listen to an Announcement

You listen to an announcement in an academic or campus setting and answer questions about what the speaker is communicating.

You may need to identify:

  • The speaker's purpose
  • Key information
  • Implied meaning
  • Likely next actions

Listen to an Academic Talk

This task involves a short academic talk given by a professor or expert. The questions can test your understanding of the main idea, supporting details and organisation of the talk, along with inferences and, sometimes, less common or idiomatic vocabulary.

The topics can come from different academic fields, but ETS says you don't need prior subject knowledge. You're being tested on your listening ability, not on what you already know about the subject.

TOEFL Writing Syllabus

The current Writing section focuses on communicating clearly in written English through practical academic and everyday tasks. The updated section includes Build a Sentence, Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion

Build a Sentence

In this task, you arrange words or phrases to create a complete and grammatically correct sentence or question.

The main areas to work on are:

  • Sentence structure
  • Grammar
  • Word order
  • Accuracy

This means basic sentence construction matters quite a bit. You don't need complicated writing here; you need accurate writing.

Write an Email

This task involves writing an email for an academic or social situation. You may need to communicate information, make a request or suggest a solution, depending on the situation presented.

Focus on:

  • Staying on topic
  • Giving clear information
  • Making requests appropriately
  • Proposing a solution
  • Following basic writing conventions

The response should make your purpose clear rather than using unnecessarily complicated language.

Write for an Academic Discussion

Here, you contribute to an online classroom discussion by stating and supporting your opinion. The task is more academic in tone, but you're still expected to communicate your ideas clearly and directly.

You should practise:

  • Developing ideas
  • Supporting an opinion
  • Responding to other viewpoints
  • Using an appropriate academic tone

ETS states that specialised background knowledge isn't required for these writing tasks.

TOEFL Speaking Syllabus

The updated Speaking section is different from the older TOEFL format. From January 21, 2026, it uses Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview tasks rather than the previous four-task speaking structure.

Listen and Repeat

You listen to spoken English and repeat what you hear as accurately as possible.

The task focuses on:

  • Pronunciation
  • Listening accuracy
  • Fluency
  • Spoken language production

The aim isn't to give a long prepared answer. You need to listen carefully and reproduce the spoken language clearly.

Take an Interview

This task uses an interview-style format in which you respond to questions and demonstrate how naturally and clearly you can communicate.

You should work on:

  • Responding appropriately
  • Expressing ideas clearly
  • Speaking with good fluency
  • Using relevant vocabulary and grammar

The current speaking section is much shorter than the older version, with ETS listing 11 items and an approximate base time of eight minutes before considering adaptive variation.

TOEFL Exam Syllabus and Scoring

In 2026 the TOEFL syllabus and exam pattern has undergone a significant change, as has the scoring. Students who take the test on January 21, 2026 will be provided with section scores and an overall score in half-point increments ranging from 1 to 6.

Section Scores

You receive separate scores for:

  • Reading
  • Listening
  • Writing
  • Speaking

Each section is reported on a 1–6 scale, using half-point increments. This gives universities more detail about the different English skills rather than relying only on one total number.

Overall TOEFL Score

The overall TOEFL score is calculated by averaging the four section scores and reporting the result on the 1–6 scale. ETS also provides a comparable 0–120 score during a two-year transition period after January 2026, which can make the new scores easier for institutions and students to interpret alongside older results.

What's Changed in the TOEFL Syllabus in 2026?

The 2026 update isn't just a scoring change. ETS also changed the test tasks and introduced an adaptive format, which means older TOEFL preparation guides may no longer match the current test.

New Adaptive Test Format

The updated TOEFL iBT is adaptive, meaning that it has a multi-stage design. The test may vary based on your performance, and as such, the number of items and total timing may not be the same as noted, ETS.

This also implies that not all candidates will be asked the same number of questions and not all candidates will spend the same time on each section.

Updated Task Types

The current TOEFL includes new task formats across all four sections:

  • Reading: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, Read an Academic Passage
  • Listening: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, Listen to an Academic Talk
  • Writing: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, Write for an Academic Discussion
  • Speaking: Listen and Repeat, Take an Interview

These changes are substantial. If your study material still talks about the old four-task Speaking section or the previous long Reading passages as the main format, it may be outdated.

How to Prepare for the TOEFL Syllabus

Preparing for the TOEFL exam syllabus starts with understanding the current format. After that, it's mostly about practising the right skills consistently rather than trying to cover everything at once.

Solve an Official Practice Test

  • Begin with an official practice test or sample task.
  • Assess your current skill level and areas for improvement.
  • Become acquainted with the new 2026 task types.
  • Utilize your results to plan your preparation.

Develop Vocabulary and Grammar Skills

  • Ready yourself in the language rather than rote-learn lists of words.
  • Practice grammar to write and construct sentences.
  • Practice of clear accurate speech in English.
  • Try to practise a little every day.

Practise With Current TOEFL Tasks

  • Use practice material based on the post-January 21, 2026 format.
  • Focus on the latest TOEFL task types.
  • Use official ETS preparation resources whenever possible.
  • Avoid relying only on older books, videos or practice sets.

Check Accuracy and Timing

  • Record what questions and tasks you miss.
  • Go over the reasons for each error.
  • Learn how to use time in various activities.
  • Keep in mind that the TOEFL is adaptive, meaning that the amount of questions and the time limits may change.
  • Try to minimize repetitive errors rather than increase the number of questions.

Conclusion

The current TOEFL exam syllabus covers Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, but the format is quite different from the older TOEFL iBT. Since January 21, 2026, the test has used shorter task types, a multistage adaptive structure and a new 1–6 scoring system.

Understanding the toefl exam pattern and syllabus before you start preparing can save you from using outdated material. The current Reading section includes tasks such as Complete the Words and Read in Daily Life, while Writing and Speaking also use newer task types that weren't part of the previous format.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is TOEFL exam syllabus difficult for beginners?

TOEFL can feel challenging for beginners because it tests several English skills in one exam. However, the difficulty depends on your current level, vocabulary, grammar and ability to understand spoken English. Regular practice and familiarity with the task types can make the test more manageable.

2. What English level is needed to take the TOEFL?

There is no fixed English level required to sit for the TOEFL. However, students applying to universities should have enough English to understand academic material, communicate clearly and complete written and spoken tasks effectively. Universities may set their own minimum score requirements.

3. Can I take the TOEFL more than once?

Yes, students can take the TOEFL multiple times, subject to ETS retake rules. Taking the test again can be useful when your first result doesn't meet a university's requirement. Before scheduling another attempt, check the institution's deadline and latest score policy.

4. Does TOEFL have a separate syllabus for undergraduate and postgraduate students?

No, there isn't a separate TOEFL exam syllabus for undergraduate and postgraduate applicants. The same TOEFL iBT assesses Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. What can differ is the score requirement set by each university or programme.

5. Is TOEFL accepted by universities outside the United States?

Yes, TOEFL is accepted by universities and institutions in many countries, including destinations across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. However, acceptance and minimum scores can vary, so applicants should confirm the requirements of each university before choosing the test.

6. Can I prepare for TOEFL exam syllabus without joining coaching classes?

Yes, self-study is possible when you have a clear study routine and access to reliable preparation material. You can practise each skill independently, take sample tests and review your mistakes, while coaching may be useful for students who need regular feedback.

7. How can I improve my TOEFL score quickly?

Start by identifying your weakest skill instead of spending equal time on everything. Practise regularly, review repeated mistakes, build useful vocabulary and work with current question formats. Taking timed practice tests can also help you become more comfortable with the exam.

8. Does the TOEFL syllabus include general English or academic English?

The test focuses on English used in everyday campus situations as well as academic settings. Reading and Listening include practical and academic material, while Writing and Speaking assess how clearly you can communicate ideas in situations relevant to study and campus life.

9. Should I follow the old TOEFL syllabus for preparation?

No. Students taking the current test should prepare using the updated format rather than older resources built around the previous TOEFL. When searching for the TOEFL exam pattern and syllabus, check that the material reflects the version introduced from January 21, 2026.

10. Where can I find the official TOEFL syllabus and practice material?

ETS is the best place to check the latest test information and preparation resources. Students searching for the TOEFL syllabus and exam pattern should use current ETS materials so that the task types, scoring information and preparation approach match the test they will actually take.

11. How can I understand the syllabus and exam pattern of TOEFL before starting preparation?

Begin by checking the four skills tested, then understand the tasks used in each section and how the updated test works. Reviewing the syllabus and exam pattern of TOEFL first can help you create a study plan based on your strengths and weaker areas.
