SAT Exam Pattern

The digital SAT is a computer-based test that takes 2 hours and 14 minutes. It has two main sections: Reading & Writing and Math. Each section is divided into 2 adaptive modules, and the total SAT score ranges from 400 to 1600. You take the exam through the College Board Bluebook app. 

There are 98 questions in total, with 54 questions in Reading and Writing and 44 in Math. You also get a 10-minute break between the two sections.

Latest SAT Exam Paper Pattern 2026 

The SAT exam is fully digital now and is taken through the Bluebook app. There are only 2 sections in the SAT Exam, namely Reading & Writing and Math. 

The exam consists of 98 questions in total, and you get about 2 hrs. and 14 mins to complete the entire exam.  

In between the 2 sections, you will generally be given a 10-minute break. 

There’s also a 10-minute break between the two sections.

Each section has 2 modules. You’ll do Module 1 first. Based on how you perform there, the second module will be set at a different difficulty level. This is why the Digital SAT is called an adaptive test. 

Most questions are multiple-choice. In the Math section, though, you’ll also get some questions where there are no answer options and you have to type in the answer yourself.

SAT Exam Pattern by Section 

The SAT has two sections, and the question format is different in both.  

In Reading and Writing, you will get short passages of around 25–150 words, followed by multiple-choice questions.  

Math includes both multiple-choice questions and questions where you need to enter the answer yourself.

You will read short passages and answer one question based on each passage. The questions can check your understanding of the text, use of words, grammar, punctuation, and how ideas are presented.

Note: You can use a calculator throughout Math. The Bluebook app comes with a built-in Desmos calculator, or you can use an approved calculator of your own.

SAT Exam Scoring Pattern 

You receive a total score as your SAT exam result that is made up of your reading and writing score and your math score.  

You don’t get separate scores for Module 1 and Module 2. Both modules together decide the final score for that section. 

Here is how the SAT score is divided:

SAT scoring is also linked to its adaptive format. How you do in the first module affects the difficulty of the second one, and your answers across both modules are used when your section score is calculated. 

This also means that getting the same number of questions correct doesn’t always lead to the exact same score. The questions you received and their difficulty are taken into account too. 

There is no negative marking on the SAT, so you don’t lose points just for giving a wrong answer.
