Paragraph A
Man can enter natural underground spaces commonly called caves. They can be divided into three main types. The most widespread and extensive caves develop in soluble rocks, usually limestone or marble, through the action of underground water. Coastal caves are formed in cliffs, generally by the concentrated pounding of waves along joints and zones of crushed rock. A few caves are formed in lava flows. In these cases, the solidified outer crust remains after the molten core has drained away, leaving rough tunnels, such as those found on the small basalt volcanoes of Auckland.
Paragraph B
Many parts of New Zealand contain limestone formations, although not all of them contain caves. These formations range from relatively recent geological periods to more than 450 million years ago. Many caves have already been discovered, but hundreds still remain to be explored. The most notable limestone areas for caves are the Te Kuiti Group, consisting of Oligocene rocks extending from Port Waikato south to Mokau and from the coast inland to the Waipa Valley, especially around Waitomo. Another important area is the Mount Arthur Marble of the mountains of northwest Nelson, which is from the Upper Ordovician period. These areas cover hundreds and tens of square kilometres respectively and are fringed in places by thin bands of Oligocene limestone.
Paragraph C
Sedimentary rocks, including limestone, are generally laid down in almost horizontal layers or beds. These may vary in thickness but are commonly around 5–7.5 centimetres and can accumulate to a total thickness of about 100 metres. Pure limestone is brittle, and folding caused by movements of the earth creates cracks along the partings and joints at angles to them.
Rainwater passes through the soil and the fractures in the underlying rocks until it reaches the water table. Below the water table, cavities and pores are filled with water. This water is usually acidic and dissolves limestone along the joints. Once a passage is opened, it becomes wider through the abrasive action of sand and pebbles carried by streams. Extensive solution takes place between the seasonal limits of the water table. Erosion may continue to cut down into the floor, while silt and pebbles may build up floors and change the course of streams. Most caves still carry the stream that originally formed them.
Paragraph D
Caves in the softer, well-bedded Oligocene limestones are typically horizontal in development. They often have passages on several levels and can be considerable in length. Gardner's Gut in Waitomo has two main levels and more than seven kilometres of passages.
Plans of caves show several distinctive features. Some have long, narrow, straight passages following joint patterns, as seen at Ruakuri and Waitomo. Others have a number of parallel passages oriented in one or more directions, as at Te Anaroa and Rockville. Vertical cross-sections can also vary. Burr Cave in Waitomo has tall and narrow passages that follow joints, while Hollow Hill has a large and irregular collapse chamber measuring 233 metres long, 59.4 metres wide, and 30.48 metres high. Luckie Strike is low and wide because it follows bedding planes, while Rangitaawa Shaft is a high vertical water-worn shaft measuring 91 metres.
Caves in the harder and more massive Mount Arthur Marble, which is a metamorphosed limestone, are mainly vertical in development. Many reach several hundred metres in depth, with Harwood Hole at Takaka being the deepest known at about 370 metres.
Paragraph E
The distinctive beauty of caves comes partly from the variety of mineral encrustations found on their walls, ceilings, and floors. Stalactites are hanging growths of crystalline calcium carbonate, or calcite, formed when small quantities of calcite are deposited from groundwater passing through the cave. They are usually white to yellow, although they can sometimes be brown or red.
Where water evaporates faster than it drips, long, thin straws may form. These can eventually reach the floor or become thicker and form columns. If the source of water moves across the ceiling, a thin curtain-like formation may develop. Helictites are stalactites that branch or curl.
Stalagmites are conical or irregular floor growths formed when water drips faster than it evaporates and splashes onto the floor. If they continue to grow upwards, they can form large columns. Where calcite is deposited by water spreading thinly over a wall or floor, pools can develop narrow walls around their edges. Gypsum is another cave deposit, and its different crystal forms are thought to be related to humidity. The gypsum flower is one of the most striking forms, growing from a point on the cave wall and spreading outward and upward like a lily or orchid.
