Times Higher Education (THE) has released the Impact Ranking 2022 that measures universities’ performance against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Western Sydney University, Australia, leads the fourth edition of Impact Rankings, followed by Arizona State University, US, and Western University, Canada. A total of 1,406 universities from 106 countries have been ranked by THE.

Western Sydney University has topped the list of THE Impact Rankings 2022, with an exceptionally high score for clean water and sanitation, which measures universities’ research related to water, commitment to ensuring good water management in the broader community and their water usage. It also performed well for responsible consumption and production, which measures universities’ research on this topic and their approach to the sustainable use of resources. The university climbed one step from its previous year’s impact ranking of 2 to feature at the top this year. 

Meanwhile, Arizona State University ranked 2nd this year and made significant progress from its 9th position last year. It received a high score for research on sustainability, life below water and education and support for aquatic ecosystems, research on life on land, and education and support for land ecosystems.

Western University scored high for the no poverty SDG, which involved research on poverty and support for students from low-income families. In Impact Rankings 2021, it ranked at 52nd position.

Ranking Parameters

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings assess how well universities perform worldwide to achieve the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 UN SDGs, and universities are evaluated on all of them. No poverty, Zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, reduced inequalities, climate action, clean water, and sanitation are a few SDGs.
