What is IELTS

IELTS stands for the International English Language Testing System and is one of the world’s most popular English language proficiency tests. It was launched in 1980 and is owned jointly by the Cambridge University Press & Assessment, IDP IELTS, and British Council. The test is widely accepted by academic institutions, governments, and employers. It helps aspirants study or work in English-speaking countries. 

What is OET

The OET or the Occupational English Test, is a globally recognized test that evaluates the English language proficiency of aspiring healthcare professionals. It is designed for aspirants who wish to work in the healthcare sector in English speaking countries. The test is owned by the CBLA(Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment Trust), a venture between the Box Hill Institute and Cambridge English.

OET vs IELTS- Which is Easier 

Both OET and IELTS assess basic English language skills in real-life situations. Though there is no metric available to claim which test is easier, OET may seem more relevant to aspirants with a healthcare background. This is because OET offers healthcare-based texts and audio samples, making it relatable. Moreover, in OET’s writing section, you will be asked to write a letter based on the case notes of a doctor. 

Even in the speaking section, candidates have to enact a conversation between a patient and a doctor. On the other hand, IELTS has long-form texts on diverse topics, and aspirants can be asked to write or discuss any topic. This helps to provide a more accurate assessment of an individual’s ability to communicate in English in university or daily life.
