If this process could be broken down and expressed through computer code, what would that mean for human creativity? Geraint Wiggins, a computational creativity researcher at Goldsmiths, University of London, describes this as a question at the very core of humanity. He says that many people are concerned by the idea because they fear that computer creativity could take away something special about what it means to be human.

To some extent, computerised art is already familiar to us. However, an important question remains: where does the work of the artist stop and the creativity of the computer begin? Aaron is one of the oldest machine artists and has had paintings exhibited at London's Tate Modern and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Aaron can pick up a paintbrush and paint on canvas by itself. However, despite this ability, it remains largely a tool for carrying out the programmer's own creative ideas.

Simon Colton, the designer of the Painting Fool, wants his creation to avoid the same criticism. Unlike earlier machine artists such as Aaron, the Painting Fool needs only minimal direction and can develop its own concepts by searching for material online. One of its original works is a series of fuzzy landscapes showing trees and sky. Some people might describe these pictures as mechanical in appearance, but Colton argues that such reactions result from people applying different standards to software-produced and human-produced art. He points out that the Painting Fool created the landscapes without referring to a photograph. However, not everyone was impressed. Geraint Wiggins criticised Cope's work as pseudoscience and condemned him for giving a deliberately vague explanation of how the software worked. Douglas Hofstadter of Indiana University also argued that EMI's compositions were still replicas that depended completely on the creative impulses of the original artists.
