SGPA = Sum of (Credit Points × Grade Points) ÷ Total Credits

For example, if a subject has 4 credits and you get 8 grade points, the credit points for that subject will be:

4 × 8 = 32

The same is carried out for each subject. The total is divided by the total credits to get the final total.

That is the reason why it is not advisable to simply add together all of your grade points and then divide them by the number of subjects. Credit value of each subject should be taken into account too. 

Step-by-Step Process to Calculate SGPA

Calculating SGPA may seem complicated at first, but the process is quite straightforward once you understand the formula and credit system. Here are some important steps involved in calculating SGPA.

1. Find the Credit Value of Each Subject

Every subject can have a different credit value. Credits indicate the weightage of a subject in Semester. Subjects with 4 units will be given more weight than those with 2 units. The credit value is often listed alongside the subject heading in your syllabus, mark sheet or in your university portal. 

For example:

• Mathematics - 4 credits
• English - 3 credits
• Computer Science - 4 credits
• Environmental Studies - 2 credits

2. Review the Points Earned for Grade

SGPA Calculation Example

Let us take a simple example with five subjects. Suppose a student has different credits and grade points for each subject. We can use the SGPA formula to find the final score.

Step 1: Add the Credit Points

32 + 27 + 36 + 14 + 16 = 125

4 + 3 + 4 + 2 + 2 = 15

So, the total credits are 15.

Step 3: Apply the SGPA Formula

SGPA = 125 ÷ 15

SGPA = 8.33

Therefore, the student's SGPA is 8.33.

This example also shows why credits matter. The 4-credit subjects have a bigger effect on the final SGPA than the 2-credit subjects.

How to Convert SGPA to Percentage?

The formula to convert SGPA to percentage is not identical for all universities. The conversion of SGPA to percentage will vary from one university to another. 

Some institutions may use a formula such as:

Percentage = SGPA × 10

For example, if your SGPA is 8.33:

8.33 × 10 = 83.3%

But that's just a common example provided. A different multiplier or formula may be employed by some universities. Students should avoid believing that this is an approach that will be suitable for their university.
