Increasing Applications from Tier 2 & 3 Cities

The desire to pursue education abroad was predominantly centered in India’s major metropolitan areas. However, last year, there was an uptick in applicants from tier-2 and 3 cities. In fact, in a survey conducted by upGrad Abroad in 2023 to gauge the aspirations of Indian youth — 80% of respondents hail from tier-2 and tier-3 cities, actively exploring avenues for studying abroad. Moreover, 44% of the upGrad Abroad cohort who were embarking on their study abroad journeys belonged to non-metro cities.

This trend will likely continue in the coming year, considering hybrid study models and many financing options available.

Indian Students Eyeing European Countries

Similar to 2023, study abroad aspirants will continue to prefer studying in European countries. They are now exploring beyond traditional study destinations, showing an increasing inclination towards – France, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Ireland. Germany especially stands out for Indian students. As it has a slew of public universities, the country offers low-cost or tuition-free education, requiring students to cover only living expenses.

Last year, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom (UK) have undergone substantial policy changes that might impact international students' decisions. 

Nevertheless, conventional choices like the UK, the United States (US), and Canada will remain decently appealing to Indian students.

According to the University Living report - ‘Beyond Beds and Boundaries: Indian Student Mobility Report 2023’, total student spending is projected to grow and reach as high as US$70 billion by 2026. This highlights the importance of having adequate funds to study abroad. 

In fact, per upGrad Abroad Transnational Education (TNE) Report 2.0, approx. 31.2% of study-abroad aspirants find accumulating the funds required to pursue overseas education difficult. To navigate this challenge, these students look for education loans, and easy financing options from banks and NBFCs (Non-Banking Financial Companies) act as a benison for them.

Also, Indian students can now ease into the curriculum and pursue higher education abroad at a significantly lower cost due to the availability of hybrid overseas learning programs in India. Nevertheless, looking at the past year’s trend, the demand for student loans for studying abroad will witness an upward trajectory only.

Fact: Per the Ministry of Finance, in the fiscal year 2022, Public Sector Banks in the nation disbursed education loans amounting to ₹ 7,576 crore for overseas education. This accounted for nearly 90% of the total education loans in the country.

Demand for Management, STEM & Healthcare Disciplines

According to the GMAC Prospective Students Survey 2023 Report, the most popular program is now the one-year MBA rather than the two-year MBA; however, full-time MBAs are still highly sought after. Millennials are more likely than Gen Z candidates to seek out curricula and skills related to management. Also, students are looking for courses rooted in sustainable concepts. According to one of the QS surveys, it was found that more than 6 in 10 students consider support for mental health and mental health counseling crucial aspects of a university’s services.
