The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a globally recognized English proficiency exam that evaluates the communication skills of non-native speakers in professional and everyday contexts. Candidates can take either the Listening and Reading test or the Speaking and Writing test based on their requirements.

The Listening and Reading test includes 200 multiple-choice questions, while the Speaking and Writing test assesses practical communication skills. TOEIC scores range from 10–990 for Listening and Reading and 0–200 for Speaking and Writing. Scores are valid for two years and are widely accepted by employers and institutions worldwide.

TOEIC Exam Pattern and Syllabus

The TOEIC exam pattern is designed to evaluate a candidate's English communication skills in workplace and everyday situations. Depending on their requirements, candidates can take the Listening and Reading test, the Speaking and Writing test, or both.

Each section assesses different language abilities and contributes to the overall TOEIC exam score, which reflects a candidate's proficiency in using English in professional environments.

The exam evaluates four key skills:

  • Listening: Understand spoken English in workplace and daily-life contexts.
  • Reading: Comprehend written texts such as emails, notices, articles, and reports.
  • Speaking: Communicate ideas clearly through spoken English in practical situations.
  • Writing: Produce grammatically correct and coherent written responses for workplace scenarios.

TOEIC Listening and Reading Test Pattern

The TOEIC Listening and Reading test evaluates a candidate's ability to understand spoken and written English used in workplace and everyday situations.

It consists of 200 multiple-choice questions and takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete. The Listening and Reading sections are scored separately, combining to form the TOEIC exam score ranging from 10 to 990

Section  Questions  Duration
Listening  100  45 minutes
Reading  100  75 minutes
Biographical Questions  —  About 30 minutes
Total  200  Approximately 2.5 hours

Listening Section

The Listening section measures a candidate's ability to understand spoken English through four types of questions:

  • Part 1: Photographs
  • Part 2: Question-Response
  • Part 3: Conversations
  • Part 4: Talks

Reading Section

The Reading section assesses grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension through the following parts:

  • Part 5: Incomplete Sentences
  • Part 6: Text Completion
  • Part 7: Reading Comprehension

TOEIC Speaking and Writing Test Pattern

The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test evaluates a candidate's ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English in workplace situations. The test consists of 11 Speaking questions and 8 Writing questions. Each section is scored separately on a scale of 0–200, contributing to an independent TOEIC exam score.

Section  Questions  Duration  Score Scale
Speaking  11  About 20 minutes  0–200
Writing  About 60 minutes  0–200

Speaking Section

The Speaking section assesses pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and the ability to express ideas clearly through the following tasks:

Questions  Task  Description
1–2  Read a text aloud  45 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to read the passage aloud.
3–4  Describe a picture  45 seconds to prepare and 30 seconds to describe the picture in detail.
5–7  Respond to questions  Answer spoken questions with 3 seconds of preparation. Questions 5–6 allow 15 seconds to respond, while Question 7 allows 30 seconds.
8–10  Respond using provided information  Review information for 45 seconds, then answer questions based on it. Question 10 is repeated twice and allows 30 seconds to respond.
11  Express an opinion  45 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to present and support your opinion.

Writing Section

The Writing section measures grammar, organization, and written communication skills through practical workplace tasks.

Questions  Task  Description
1–5  Write a sentence based on a picture  Create one sentence for each picture using the two given words or phrases.
6–7  Respond to a written request  Write email responses based on workplace situations. Candidates have 10 minutes to read and respond to each email.
Write an opinion essay  Write an essay stating, explaining, and supporting your opinion on a given topic. An effective response typically contains at least 300 words.

The TOEIC exam pattern focuses on practical English skills used in professional settings, making the test valuable for employers seeking candidates with strong workplace communication abilities. Your TOEIC exam score reflects how effectively you can understand and use English across these real-world situations.

TOEIC Exam Eligibility Criteria

The TOEIC exam is open to anyone who wants to assess their English communication skills for academic, professional, or personal purposes. Unlike many standardized tests, TOEIC does not have strict eligibility requirements regarding age or educational qualifications.

It is commonly taken by students planning to study or work abroad, job seekers, working professionals, and individuals looking to demonstrate their English proficiency to employers.

Age Requirement

There is no fixed age limit for taking the TOEIC exam. However, candidates should check with their chosen ETS-authorized test centre, as some centres may have specific policies regarding minor applicants or identification requirements.

Educational Qualification

The TOEIC exam does not require any minimum educational qualification. Candidates from any academic background can take the test, whether they are high school students, university students, graduates, or working professionals.

The exam is intended for anyone who wants to measure their English communication skills for employment, higher education, or career advancement.

Documents Required for TOEIC Registration

Candidates should keep the following documents and information ready while registering for the TOEIC exam:

  • Valid passport or another government-issued photo identity proof (as accepted by the test centre)
  • Personal and registration details, including contact information
  • Payment information to complete the TOEIC exam fee payment
  • Any additional documents required by the selected ETS-authorized test centre (if applicable)

TOEIC Scoring System

The TOEIC exam score measures a candidate’s ability to understand and communicate in English across professional and everyday situations.

TOEIC scores are reported separately for each test section, allowing employers and institutions to evaluate specific language skills. Higher scores indicate stronger English communication abilities and proficiency.

TOEIC Listening and Reading Scores

The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is scored on a scale of 10 to 990. The Listening and Reading sections are scored separately and combined to provide the overall score.

Section  Score Range
Listening  5–495
Reading  5–495
Total  10–990

TOEIC Speaking and Writing Scores

The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test evaluates a candidate’s ability to communicate effectively through spoken and written English. Each section receives an individual score on a scale of 0 to 200

Section  Score Range
Speaking  0–200
Writing  0–200

A higher TOEIC exam score reflects better English communication skills and the ability to use English effectively in workplace environments. TOEIC scores are generally valid for two years from the test date.
