Academic Requirements

Oxford accepts a range of UK and international qualifications, and the minimum for the main ones is like this:

• A-Levels: A*AA in one academic year, including Chemistry and at least one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics.
• International Baccalaureate (IB): 39 points including the core points, with 7, 6, 6 at Higher Level. Chemistry has to be one of the Higher Level subjects, along with one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics.
• Advanced Highers: AA in Chemistry and one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics, along with AAAAA in Highers.

Oxford also accepts other equivalent qualifications, so if you are studying something different, it is better to check the official list of accepted qualifications before you apply. 

Chemistry is compulsory, and Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Further Mathematics are the other subjects Oxford recommends. If any of your science subjects has a practical part, you are expected to pass it as well.

UCAT Requirement

Every applicant has to take the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT), and you need to register and book it on your own before the deadline. An application without a valid UCAT score will not be considered.

Important Deadlines for MBBS at Oxford University

Oxford's medicine deadlines come much earlier than the deadlines for most other courses, because you have to apply in October of the year before you want to start. 

For the October 2027 entry, the UCAS deadline is 15 October 2026, and before that you also have to finish the UCAT, so it is better to plan the whole timeline in advance.

The first four dates in the table are for the UCAT, and they are already over for the 2027 entry. So if you are applying this year, you should have booked and given your UCAT before 24 September. 

For the 2028 entry, the dates will most likely fall in the same months, like the UCAT between May and September and the UCAS deadline in mid-October, but Oxford and the UCAT Consortium will share the exact dates later.

The UCAT is a separate test and you have to book it on your own, so it's better to start preparing a few months before registration opens. This way, you get enough time to give the test, get your documents ready and send your UCAS application before the deadline.

MBBS Intakes & Admissions at Oxford University

Oxford admits medicine students only once a year, and the course starts in October. You apply through UCAS, and the form opens in May, and you must submit it by 15 October, a full year before the course starts. 

Before that you also need to take the UCAT, so the whole process from when you start preparing to when you begin classes takes more than a year.

How to Get Admission in Oxford University for MBBS?

To get into Oxford for MBBS, you go through three main stages. First, you check that you meet the requirements. Then you take the UCAT. Finally, you apply through UCAS and go through the interview.

Let's go through each one:

Phase 1: Check Your Eligibility

• Grades and Subjects: You need top grades in school, with Chemistry as a must, and your qualification should be on Oxford's accepted list.
• Age: You must be 18 years old by 1 November in the year you start the course.
• English Test: You don't send your English test scores with your application. Oxford asks for them after you get an offer, and you need to meet the level by 31 July that year.
• Limited Seats for International Students: Oxford can take a maximum of 14 international students per year across both its medicine courses.

Phase 2: Take the UCAT

• Register and book the UCAT on your own before the booking deadline.
• Oxford does not look at any application without a UCAT score.
• Your UCAT score and your school results decide if you get shortlisted for an interview.

Phase 3: The Application Process

Step 1: Submit Your UCAS Application: Apply through UCAS with the course code A100. You can start filling in the form in May, and you must send it by 6 PM BST on 15 October. Keep your transcripts, a reference from your teacher, personal statement and passport copy ready. 

You can pick a college or make an open application, where Oxford picks one for you. If you don't have GCSEs, your teacher can comment on your internal school exam results instead.

Step 2: Go for Your Interview: If Oxford likes your application, they invite you for online interviews in December. Most students are interviewed by two colleges. They check your science ability, your understanding of a medical career, and if you can become a caring doctor.

Step 3: Get Your Offer: Decisions come in mid-January. The offer is usually conditional, so you need to meet its conditions, like UK's immunisation rules, fitness to practise rules and a background (DBS) check.

At Oxford, most of your teaching happens in tutorials, where you sit with your tutor in a group that is often just two students. 

In the third year, every student also does a research project and finishes the pre-clinical stage with a BA in Medical Sciences, and only after that do you move on to the hospital years. The medical school is also quite small, so you end up knowing your teachers well.

Oxford is expensive and hard to get into. The tuition alone costs over ₹4 crore for six years, and only about 11 percent of applicants get a place.
