Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply to the University of Glasgow with predicted grades or must I wait for final results?

Yes, you may apply using predicted grades; the university issues conditional offers based on them. Applications missing predicted grades, especially for Medicine, will be rejected. Glasgow considers predicted grades alongside subject combinations, personal statements, and references.

Can I enter the second year directly at Glasgow if I have strong A‑level or IB results?

Yes. Glasgow considers advanced entry into second year for eligible degrees if you submit UCAS with second-year entry selected and meet the exceptional grade thresholds (A‑levels, Advanced Highers, or IB) specified per programme. Not all courses allow it, and entry is assessed case-by-case.

Does the University of Glasgow participate in the SAAS funding scheme for EU students?

Yes. Any EU student holding settled or pre‑settled status by  1st  August  2021 is treated as a Scottish student and eligible for SAAS tuition funding each year. EU students without status pay international fees and cannot access SAAS.

Can students switch between faculties (e.g., from Arts to Social Sciences) after enrollment?

Yes. You can request an internal transfer by mid‑year, subject to programme availability, academic performance, and departmental approval. Transfers into restricted-entry courses require meeting those courses’ standard entry requirements.

Are students at Glasgow expected to self‑enrol in courses each year, or is it automatic?

You must self‑enrol each semester via MyCampus, selecting courses and confirming registration. Failure to enrol by deadlines places your status at risk, and changes require faculty permission.

How does the University of Glasgow handle assessment re‑sits or deferrals?

If you fail or miss an exam due to valid reasons, you may apply for a deferred attempt or re‑sit, normally held during the next examination period. You must submit formal documentation through your school.

Are joint degrees across two departments common and officially supported at Glasgow?

Yes. Glasgow offers many joint‑honours programmes combining two subjects (e.g., Law & Business, Maths & Physics). These are official degree routes—check each programme’s handbook for entry requirements and structure.

Are there visa‑friendly part‑time jobs near the Glasgow campus for international students?

Yes. International students can work up to 20 hours per week during term. Careers Services lists on‑campus roles and local openings, and the city offers numerous retail, hospitality, and university-linked student jobs.

How early should I arrive in Glasgow before classes begin to settle things like housing and banking?

Aim to arrive 2–3 weeks before term starts. This allows time for accommodation setup, opening a UK bank account, attending Welcome Week, completing enrolment, and NHS registration.

What should I do if I receive my visa late but want to keep my admission at Glasgow?

Contact Admissions and International Support immediately. They can update your CAS acceptance deadline, defer start, or advise on late arrival registration. Late arrival does not automatically cancel your offer if communication is prompt.

Does Glasgow allow students to pause their studies mid-degree for work or travel reasons?

Yes. You can apply for a Leave of Absence for up to one academic year. Approval depends on academic standing, reason provided, and visa status. During this period, your tuition fees pause, and access to university facilities may be limited.
