Who Is Eligible for dMAT 2026?
The dMAT eligibility 2026 rules apply to certain Indian students who are planning to study a Masters degree in Germany. You may need to take the dMAT exam if your undergraduate degree falls under one of the selected academic fields and you plan to start your Masters in Summer Semester 2027 or later, and no exemption applies to you.
The requirement currently mainly covers students from these three academic groups:

Business and Management
Your intake and APS status also matter. So, having a degree in one of these fields alone does not always decide whether you need the dMAT.

If you fall into one of the affected academic groups, check your APS registration and document submission dates as well. Some students may be covered by transitional rules or exemptions. If the dMAT applies to you, you can submit your APS documents before your dMAT certificate is ready. However, APS India can issue your APS certificate only after it receives and checks the dMAT certificate.
So, before registering for the dMAT, check your undergraduate field, intended Masters intake, and APS status together. This will give you a clearer idea of whether the dMAT requirement applies to you.
Not every Indian student who wants to study a Masters in Germany needs to take the dMAT. The official rules include some exemptions based on your study level, academic background, APS status, and when you started the APS process.
You may be exempt from the dMAT eligibility 2026 requirement if you fall into one of the following categories:
You completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026: This exemption applies even if you ship your hardcopy documents after 29 June 2026.
You shipped your complete APS documents before 29 June 2026: This applies even if APS verification is still ongoing and no APS certificate has been issued yet. Keep your proof of shipment, because APS India can ask for it.
You already have an APS certificate: Students who completed the APS process and received their APS certificate do not need to take the dMAT for that completed APS process. If you submit a new APS application later, the rules in force at that time apply.
You are applying for a Bachelor’s degree: The current dMAT requirement is for selected Masters applicants, not Bachelor’s applicants.
You are a Bachelor’s student who has not completed enough semesters: You are not required to take the dMAT if you have not yet completed at least 5 semesters in a 3-year programme or at least 7 semesters in a 4-year programme.
You are applying for a PhD: PhD applicants are outside the current dMAT requirement.
Your previous degree is outside the affected fields: Students whose undergraduate degree does not fall under Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics, or Business and Management do not need the dMAT.
The dMAT is also not intended for the winter semester 2026/27 intake. The requirement is for applications connected with the summer semester 2027 intake and later intakes.
dMAT Eligibility for Interdisciplinary Degrees
Some students have a degree that covers more than one subject. For example, your undergraduate course may include subjects from engineering, computer science, business, economics, or another field. In such cases, it may not be clear whether the dMAT eligibility 2026 rules apply to you.
APS India decides how your degree is classified, not your university. Your degree title alone may not be enough to decide this. The subjects covered in your degree and the way your academic background is classified can also matter.
Students with an interdisciplinary degree should check:
The full name and type of their undergraduate degree
The main subjects covered in the degree
Whether their academic background falls under an affected field
Whether their intended intake is Summer Semester 2027 or later

Step 1: Check Your Study Level
First, check the type of programme you want to study in Germany. The dMAT requirement is linked to selected Masters applicants, so it does not apply to Bachelor’s or PhD applicants.
Bachelor students who have not completed at least 5 semesters in a 3-year programme, or 7 semesters in a 4-year programme, are also not required to take the dMAT.
Step 2: Check Your Previous Degree
Next, look at the field of your undergraduate degree. The affected groups are Engineering; Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics; and Business and Management.
If your degree is interdisciplinary or does not clearly fit into one group, check the updated APS India list of affected fields or email APS India instead of guessing.
Step 3: Check Your Intended Intake
Then, check when your Masters programme will begin. The requirement applies to applications connected with the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later.
Applications for the winter semester 2026/27 intake are not the target of the dMAT introduction.
Step 4: Check Your APS Status
Finally, check when you completed your APS online registration and when you shipped your complete APS documents. Both dates decide whether an exemption applies.
You are exempt if either date is before 29 June 2026. You must submit a dMAT certificate if both dates are on or after 29 June 2026 and your degree is in an affected field. If you already hold an APS certificate, you do not need the dMAT for that completed procedure.

Is dMAT mandatory for Masters applicants from India?
Not for every Indian student applying for a Masters in Germany. The requirement applies to applicants whose previous degree is in an affected field and who apply for Summer Semester 2027 or later. Your APS status decides whether an exemption applies. It is best to check your individual case before registering.
Is dMAT required for BTech graduates?
Yes, if you apply for Summer Semester 2027 or later and no exemption applies. BTech graduates fall under Engineering, which is one of the affected academic groups. Your APS dates still matter, because you are exempt if you registered or shipped your documents before 29 June 2026.
Is dMAT required for BCom graduates?
Yes, BCom falls under the Commerce, Accounting, Finance and Economics group, so the requirement applies if you apply for Summer Semester 2027 or later and no exemption applies. Check your APS registration and document shipment dates before booking the test. This is especially important if you registered with APS before 29 June 2026.
Is dMAT required for MBA or Management graduates?
Students with a background in Business or Management fall under an affected group when their previous degree is in that field. APS India looks at your previous degree, intake, and APS dates. Check these three points together before registering. If you are unsure how your degree is classified, email APS India.
Is dMAT required for Data Science graduates?
A Data Science degree does not automatically mean that you need dMAT under the India-specific APS requirement. APS India decides how a previous degree is classified, and it has said it will announce an updated list of affected fields. If your degree covers several fields, check that list or email APS India before making a decision.
Is dMAT required for Bachelor's students?
No. Students applying for Bachelor’s programmes in Germany are not required to take the dMAT. The requirement applies to selected Masters applicants. Bachelor students who have not completed at least 5 semesters in a 3-year programme, or 7 semesters in a 4-year programme, are also not required to take it.
Is dMAT required for PhD applicants?
No. PhD applicants are not required to take the dMAT under the current procedure. PhD admissions usually have their own academic and university-specific requirements. If you are planning doctoral studies in Germany, check the requirements of your university and programme separately.
How much does the dMAT exam cost?
The dMAT exam fee is €150 (₹15,900). This fee is paid to g.a.s.t. during registration. If APS verification is required for your application, the APS fee is separate from the dMAT exam fee.
Do I need dMAT if I already have an APS certificate?
No. If you have already completed the APS process and received your APS certificate, you do not need to take the dMAT for that completed procedure. If you submit a new APS application later, the rules in force at that time apply. Keep your APS documents ready when checking your status.
Is dMAT required for all German universities?
No. The India-specific dMAT requirement is connected to the APS process for certain applicants and is not a general rule saying that every German university requires dMAT. Is the dMAT exam compulsory for Germany?
