Academic Criteria

Your marks matter a lot while applying for this scholarship, as it is the first requirement that you must have graduated from a reputed and recognized Indian university and have secured no less than 60% marks.  

The scholarship is open for the following degree levels: 

• Master's programmes
• PhD programmes
• Postdoctoral studies

Students in the final year of their degree can also apply. If your final results are still awaited, you can still submit an application.

If you are in your final year and have not got your results yet, you can still apply for this scholarship. After receiving your admission letter, the details can then be provided to the Endowment. 

Age Requirement

You must be below the age of 45 years on the prescribed cut-off date to apply for the scholarship. 

If you had previously applied for the scholarship and were unsuccessful, you can reapply- provided you meet all the required eligibility rules. 

Eligibility for Students Already Studying Abroad

Students who have already started their postgraduate studies abroad may also apply. However, there should be at least one full academic year remaining in the programme when the scholarship award is made.

Students currently on CPT or OPT training breaks must also meet the remaining study-duration requirements set by the Endowment.

Benefits of the JN Tata Endowment Scholarship

Unlike regular scholarships, this programme is offered as a “loan scholarship”. This means selected students receive financial support for their studies abroad and repay the amount later according to the repayment terms set by the Endowment. 

Along with the loan provided, you will also receive a few additional benefits that may help you reduce the overall cost of your education abroad.

• Funding through scholarships: A selected number of students may get funding in the range of ₹1 lakh to ₹20 lakh. The exact amount will depend upon various criteria such as the student's profile, course, university, and fund requirements.
• Low-interest loan: The education loan provided by this scheme has a very low 2% annual interest rate, which is much lower compared to other education loans available for students.
• Later repayment: Scholars do not need to pay back their loan right after completing their education. Generally, payment will be made from the third year onwards after the completion of their courses.
• Installments: The loan amount will be paid back by the scholars in installments over a number of years, making it convenient for them to repay.
• Gift award to selected scholars: Selected scholars may get additional gift awards that fall between ₹2 lakh and ₹7.5 lakh, depending upon their performance in the selection process.
• Travel aid: Selected candidates will also get some financial help for travel in the form of up to ₹2.5 lakh for their foreign study.
• Additional financial help: Some selected scholars can avail themselves of awards and assistance that are offered under Allied Tata trusts as well.

The applications for the 2026-27 application cycle have now closed. The forms were available from 5th Jan 2026 till 26th March 2026.

JN Tata Endowment Loan Repayment

Since the scholarship is awarded as a loan scholarship, selected scholars are required to repay the amount after completing their studies. The repayment terms are designed to give students enough time to settle into their careers before repayment begins.

Here are the key repayment details:

• Interest rate: The loan carries a 2% simple interest rate per year.
• Repayment period: The loan is covered under a 7-year agreement signed by the scholar and guarantor.
• When repayment starts: Repayment does not begin immediately after graduation. Scholars usually start repaying the loan from the third year after disbursement.
• Installment structure: The amount is repaid through five equal installments, spread between the third and seventh year after the scholarship amount is disbursed.
• Early repayment: Scholars can choose to repay the loan earlier if they wish. There is no penalty for early repayment.

A guarantor is required before the loan scholarship is formally awarded. The guarantor is usually a parent or guardian, although other arrangements may be considered in specific situations.
