The National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) guidelines have been revised, and applications are now invited for the 2022-23 academic year. The main objective of this revised scheme is to pave the way for students from lower-income groups belonging to denotified nomadic tribes, semi-nomadic tribes, scheduled castes, traditional artisans category and landless agricultural labourers to procure higher education from universities abroad. The scheme will help students pursue master’s or doctoral studies and improve their overall economic and social status.

As per Gandham Chandrudu, Special Secretary (Department of Social Welfare), “ In each selection year, 125 fresh awards subject to availability of funds are given under the scheme” This scheme will provide monetary assistance to the eligible candidates to pursue doctoral studies or master’s degree in universities in abroad which are accredited by the government or the authority body.

In total, there are 125 slots, out of which 115 are reserved for students from Scheduled Caste, four slots for traditional artisans and landless agricultural labourers, six for denotified nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes. Suppose the students are not available to the extent mentioned for each group in the listed category; the slot will open for applicants from different categories on a merit basis.

For women candidates, 30% of awards will be reserved for the women candidates, and if there are not enough female applicants, the unused slots would be substituted with deserving male candidates.

Mr Gandham also mentioned that students who are already staying abroad, studying abroad, and completing their studies by applying for any other scholarship are not eligible for this scholarship under any circumstances.
