When looking for universities to apply to, the acceptance rate becomes the most important thing to consider. By acceptance rate, we mean the percentage of applicants who make it to the final list of selected students after the screening process. While some universities can even have 100% acceptance rates, that for the top-rated universities can often be surprisingly low.

Universities that receive large numbers of applications often tend to keep their acceptance rates low to keep the standard of the selection process higher. The Northern Michigan University acceptance rate is 74.4%, which is fairly selective, but high enough to invite applications from hopeful students.

Admission eligibility criteria

Wondering how to get admission in Northern Michigan University? The admission criteria for this reputed university are quite standard, although they differ according to the course you choose. For applying to the undergraduate courses, you must:

• Have completed high school
• Have a cumulative high school GPA of 2.25 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Students who do not fulfil the last criteria need not get disheartened, as the university considers even students without a cumulative GPA of 2.25 for admission. In such cases, the admission board reviews the chosen courses, grades, patterns in academic performance, the program opted for, and any other relevant information that the student may provide before making a final decision. Often, such students are allowed restricted admission to a specific program, conditional admission, or even regular admission.

For applying to the postgraduate level, you must:

• Have completed a baccalaureate or equivalent degree
• Have required scores on IELTS, TOEFL PBT, or other English proficiency tests.
• Have a GPA of 3.0 or more on a 4.0 scale.

Documents required

Tests required/Average scores

The admissions board of Northern Michigan University does not consider test scores such as the ACT and SAT while determining a candidate's eligibility for admission or scholarships. However, applicants can file these as additional support to their application as they do not harm their candidacy. If a student fails to meet the GPA requirements, the university can consider these as additional information before making a decision.

How university evaluates applicants

Universities evaluate applicants based on the admission criteria set by them. Thus, to get into the university of choice, one must pay attention to fulfilling these prerequisites. Northern Michigan University, however, is an exception as it considers even students who do not always meet their academic requirements.

As we have already discussed, Northern Michigan University assesses students who do not have the required GPA of 2.25 by evaluating trends in their grade patterns and considering aptitude tests and any other material that the students provide along with the application. Therefore, even if you do not fulfil the Northern Michigan University admission criteria, do not give up hope. Instead, prepare and attach documents that can explain the drop in your grades and provide an alternative material for assessment.

Tips for applying to university

Applying to a university of your choice is a big stepping stone in your career, and we understand that you would like to leave no room for mistakes. To help increase your chances of getting selected, here are a few tips that would make your application stand out among thousands:

• Choose a specialisation while you still have time and focus on meeting its eligibility criteria. While in high school, stay focused on your goal and prevent your grades from falling below the cutoff.
• Register for aptitude tests and ace them. Although Northern Michigan University does not mandate taking these tests, their results can add additional weightage to your candidacy, making you stand out.
• Plan your application and be prepared in advance. Last-minute hassles can often leave you with unforeseen problems that will lower your credibility as a candidate.

Application deadlines

Northern Michigan University does not stipulate application or enrollment deposit deadlines. Instead, they welcome admission for all terms and review and process applications as and when they come. They invite applications from both freshman and transfer candidates continuously and make the final decisions regarding admissions as the admissions board goes through each file.
