Father of Modern Management Reading Answers

IELTS has four parts. Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. In the Reading part, you read a passage and answer questions on it, which shows if you really understood what you read, not just skimmed through it.

Father of Modern Management is a passage built around Peter Drucker, one of the most influential thinkers in the field of business management. It talks about his early books, his ideas on treating workers as valuable resources, his concept of management by objectives, and the criticism his work received over the years.

This passage has 14 questions in total, split across three different question types. You'll deal with Matching Headings, Yes/No/Not Given, and Multiple Choice questions in the same set.

Here's the exact Father of Modern Management IELTS Reading Answers key, based on the original test paper.

Father of Modern Management IELTS Reading Passage for Practice

Ever read about someone whose ideas got so widely accepted that people forgot who came up with them first? That's basically Peter Drucker's story, and this passage walks through exactly how his thinking reshaped the entire field of business management.

What follows below is not the original exam passage used for the Father of Modern Management 2 reading answers set. It's a fresh practice version, written in different words but covering the same ideas, the same structure, and the same order of information, so you can genuinely practise with it.

Read through it carefully before jumping into the questions.

Father of Modern Management IELTS Reading Passage for Practice

A: Peter Drucker is widely seen as one of the most important voices in management thinking of the last century. Over his career, he wrote dozens of books and countless articles, all pushing one central idea: management matters far more than people give it credit for. His influence reached organisations of every size, in every sector, from private businesses to public bodies to nonprofits.
B: Drucker's earliest two books didn't win over academic critics, who felt he covered too much ground without enough depth. Still, those books caught attention for arguing that companies carry a responsibility to society, not just a duty to make money. His third book turned out to be a runaway success and has stayed in print for decades since.

C: Two ideas from that third book ended up shaping the rest of his career. First, he believed workers should be treated as valuable resources, not just expenses on a balance sheet. He was openly critical of assembly-line work, arguing it slowed everyone down to the pace of the least productive worker and ignored individual creativity entirely.

His second idea centred on the rise of what he called knowledge workers. Drucker argued that society was shifting away from physical labour and toward work built on knowledge and thinking. This meant managers needed to stop treating employees like replaceable parts and start seeing them as thinkers with real value.

D: Drucker is also credited with creating "management by objectives," a method where organisations set clear long-term goals and then break them into smaller, achievable targets. He believed a small group of senior managers should define these big-picture goals, while other managers handled the specifics.

Critics saw this as a step back from his earlier, more people-focused ideas. Drucker disagreed, insisting that too much freedom leads to chaos, while too much control kills creativity. His answer was balance: set the direction, then let people figure out how to get there.

E: Drucker's work faced three common criticisms over the years. The first was that he focused too heavily on large organisations and largely ignored small businesses. His most famous book was, in many ways, a celebration of big companies, and it helped spark decades of business thinking centred on scale.

The second criticism targeted his idea of management by objectives, with critics arguing that better ideas usually come from lower down in an organisation, not from the top. The third criticism painted him as someone standing outside formal academic management theory, never fully committing to one specific school of thought.

F: There's some truth to these criticisms, but the third one misses the bigger picture. Drucker helped build management into an actual profession, something worth studying seriously. Many of his once-radical ideas are so widely accepted today that people forget how groundbreaking they were when he first introduced them decades ago. Even in his nineties, he kept producing fresh ideas, especially around how nonprofit organisations should be run.

Father of Modern Management Reading Questions

You've gone through the passage once already, so now comes the real test of whether the Father of Modern Management Reading Answers actually sank in. This set has three different question types packed together, which means your approach needs to shift a little as you move from one section to the next.

Every question below is written fresh, in different wording from the real exam paper, so treat this purely as extra practice, not a repeat of the original test.

Questions 1–6: Matching Headings

This section has six paragraphs, labelled A through F, and a list of possible headings below them. Your job is to pick the heading that best sums up the main idea of each paragraph, not just a heading that repeats a word you noticed while reading.

A quick thing worth knowing before you start: there are more headings in the list than there are paragraphs. That means a few headings simply won't get used at all. So don't feel like you're missing something if one seems left over at the end, and also be careful while choosing the answer, as it may confuse you.

List of Headings

i. Drucker's early writing career
ii. How Drucker's ideas spread across industries
iii. Balancing structure with creative freedom
iv. Criticism of Drucker's focus on large companies
v. The debate over knowledge-based work
vi. A broader assessment of Drucker's legacy
vii. Government's role in shaping management theory
viii. How Drucker changed views on employees
ix. The origins of assembly-line production

  1. Paragraph A
  2. Paragraph B
  3. Paragraph C

Questions 7–10: True, False, Not Given

This next set moves away from headings and into statement based questions. You'll be given four statements, and your job is to figure out how each one lines up against the passage you already read.

This part trips up a lot of students, mostly because false and not given can feel like the same thing at first glance. They're not, so read each statement fully before deciding. Write:

TRUE if the statement agrees with the passage
FALSE if the statement goes against the passage
NOT GIVEN if the passage doesn't mention it at all

  1. Drucker believed assembly-line work brought out the best in individual workers.
  2. Drucker's concept of management by objectives involved breaking long-term goals into smaller ones.
  3. Drucker's writing was praised by every academic critic who reviewed it.
  4. Drucker stopped producing new ideas after reaching his seventies.

Questions 11–12: Multiple Choice

This section switches things up. Instead of one right answer, the Father of Modern Management 2 reading answers here ask you to pick two from a list of five. Read every option carefully, don't stop at the first one that sounds correct.

These questions focus on Drucker's actual views from the passage. Choose TWO letters, A–E, that match ideas genuinely found in the text, not just ideas that sound reasonable.

A. Workers should be treated as valuable resources rather than simple costs.
B. Assembly-line production brings out creativity in workers.
C. Senior managers alone should decide every detail of daily operations.
D. Long-term goals work best when broken into smaller, achievable targets.
E. Knowledge workers have no real influence over how society values education.

Questions 13–14: Multiple Choice

Choose TWO letters, A–E, that reflect criticisms mentioned in the passage.

A. Drucker's work focused too heavily on large organisations.
B. Drucker refused to write about entrepreneurship at any point in his career.
C. Some believe strategic ideas should come from lower levels of an organisation.
D. Drucker avoided writing about nonprofit organisations entirely.
E. Drucker's early books were criticised for being too narrow in scope.

Answers 1–6: Matching Headings

Here's where each paragraph's heading gets explained, one at a time, so you can see exactly why it fits and not just which letter or number goes with it. This part of the reading answers of Father of Modern Management covers the six paragraph headings one by one.

Q1: Paragraph A
A: ii. How Drucker's ideas spread across industries
 Location: Paragraph A
Explanation: This paragraph talks about how Drucker's influence reached organisations of every size and sector, which is exactly what this heading captures.

Q2: Paragraph B
 A: i. Drucker's early writing career
 Location: Paragraph B
Explanation: The paragraph focuses on his first books and how critics and readers responded to them early on, making this heading the clear match.

Q3: Paragraph C
A: viii. How Drucker changed views on employees
 Location: Paragraph C
Explanation: This section explains Drucker's belief that workers are resources, not costs, and introduces his idea of knowledge workers, both tied directly to how employees were viewed.

Q4: Paragraph D
A: iii. Balancing structure with creative freedom
 Location: Paragraph D
Explanation: The paragraph is built around Drucker's idea that too much control kills creativity while too much freedom causes chaos, which lines up exactly with this heading.

Q5: Paragraph E
A: iv. Criticism of Drucker's focus on large companies
 Location: Paragraph E
Explanation: This paragraph lists out the main criticisms of Drucker's work, with the strongest point being his focus on big organisations over small ones.

Q6: Paragraph F
A: vi. A broader assessment of Drucker's legacy
 Location: Paragraph F
Explanation: This closing paragraph weighs both the fair and unfair criticisms of Drucker, landing on an overall judgment of his lasting impact.

Answers 7–10: True, False, Not Given

This set moves from headings into statements, so the reasoning behind each answer works a little differently here. False and not given especially need a closer look, since it's easy to mix the two up.

Q7: Drucker believed assembly-line work brought out the best in individual workers.
 A: FALSE
 Location: Paragraph C
Explanation: The passage says Drucker openly criticised assembly-line work for ignoring individual creativity, which directly contradicts this statement.

Q8: Drucker's concept of management by objectives involved breaking long-term goals into smaller ones.
 A: TRUE
 Location: Paragraph D
Explanation: The passage describes exactly this process, setting big goals and then splitting them into smaller, more immediate targets.

Q9: Drucker's writing was praised by every academic critic who reviewed it.
 A: FALSE
 Location: Paragraph B
Explanation: The passage says academic critics didn't like how broadly his early books covered different topics, which goes against the word "every" in this statement.

Q10: Drucker stopped producing new ideas after reaching his seventies.
 A: NOT GIVEN
 Location: Paragraph F
Explanation: The passage says Drucker kept producing new ideas into his nineties, but it never mentions anything about his seventies specifically, so this stays not given.

Answers 11–12: Multiple Choice

These four questions ask for two correct letters, not one, so both answers matter equally here. Below is what the passage actually supports, along with the reasoning behind each pick.

Correct answers: A and D

Explanation for A: The passage clearly states Drucker believed workers should be seen as resources rather than costs, matching this option directly.

Explanation for D: Paragraph D describes Drucker's method of breaking long-term goals into smaller, more immediate ones, which matches this option word for word in meaning.

Answers 13–14: Multiple Choice

Correct answers: A and C

Explanation for A: Paragraph E states plainly that one major criticism was Drucker's focus on large organisations, ignoring smaller ones.

Explanation for C: The same paragraph mentions that critics preferred strategic ideas to come from the middle and bottom of an organisation, not just from the top, matching this option closely.

How to Approach Father of Modern Management IELTS Reading Questions?

This passage mixes three different question types together, which is exactly why students searching for Father of Modern Management Reading Answers need a slightly different strategy for each section. What works for Matching Headings won't necessarily help you with Multiple Choice.

Here are a few ways to handle each type well, using examples from this very passage.

1. For Matching Headings, Find the Main Idea First

Don't pick a heading just because one word matches something in the paragraph. Read the whole paragraph first, then ask yourself what it's really about at a bigger level.

Paragraph C, for example, mentions assembly lines briefly, but the bigger idea is about how Drucker viewed employees overall. Picking a heading based on just the assembly line detail would lead you to the wrong answer.

Quick check before choosing a heading:

  • What's the paragraph mostly about, not just what it mentions in passing?
  • Does the heading cover the whole paragraph, or just one small part?

2. For Yes/No/Not Given, Separate Contradiction From Silence

FALSE means the passage says the opposite of the statement. NOT GIVEN means the passage never brings up that specific detail at all.

If the passage...

Your answer

States the same thing as the question TRUE
States something opposite FALSE
Never mentions it NOT GIVEN

Question 10 is a good example of this. The passage talks about Drucker's nineties, but never touches on his seventies specifically. That gap is exactly why it's not given, not false.

3. For Multiple Choice, Eliminate the Clearly Wrong Options First

Instead of hunting for the right answer straight away, cross out any option that clearly contradicts the passage. This narrows your choices fast and reduces the guesswork.

In questions 11–12, option B says assembly-line work brings out creativity, but the passage says the exact opposite. Crossing that out immediately makes the remaining options easier to evaluate.

4. Watch for Words Like "Every," "Only," and "Entirely"

These words often decide whether a statement is true or false. A passage might support a general idea, but the word "every" or "entirely" can push it too far and make the statement false.

Question 9 uses the word "every," but the passage only mentions criticism from some academic critics, not universal praise or blame. That single word is what tips the answer toward false.

5. Use Paragraph Order to Save Time

Matching Headings questions usually follow the same order as the paragraphs themselves. So once you've matched paragraph A, move forward to B instead of jumping around the passage randomly.

This keeps your reading focused and cuts down on the time spent rereading sections you've already covered.
