Sydney Scholars India Scholarship Program

The Sydney Scholars India Scholarship program is a merit-based scholarship for Indian students admitted to the University of Sydney. It was announced in February 2019 with a budget of USD 500,000 per year. During its inception, 19 Indian students availed of this scholarship for admission to various courses at the University of Sydney.

The university unveiled the scholarship to boost ties with India and provide an opportunity to some of the country’s future visionary leaders. The scholarship also aims to secure a partnership with India to promote investment in research and collaboration with industry partners. 

To remove the financial hurdle for visionary students, the scholarship is open to all Indian Students admitted to the University of Sydney.

Eligibility

The Sydney Scholars India Scholarship program’s eligibility criteria are as follows:

• Candidates must have secured an unconditional offer letter for any course at the University of Sydney.
• The applicant must be a current citizen and resident of India.
• The candidate must not hold a previous Sydney Scholars India Scholarship.

After securing the scholarship, the student must remain enrolled in the full-time program after the census date. The scholarship amount will be transferred after each semester’s census date. Once the candidate receives the scholarship, no deferrals or suspensions are allowed. 

Merely securing the scholarship isn’t sufficient. The candidate must maintain a minimum semester average mark of 65 to continue receiving the scholarship. It is flexible, and the student can transfer it to another degree within the university if they choose to do so. However, it cannot be transferred to another university.

Benefits

With the Sydney Scholars India Scholarship program, students can avail of a scholarship that covers a significant chunk of their educational experiences at the University of Sydney. The USD 500,000 scholarship is divided among 28 students and offers the following benefits:

• USD 40,000 per annum each for 03 students pursuing an undergraduate degree of up to four years.
• USD 20,000 each for one year for 10 students pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate course.
• USD 10,000 each for one year for 15 students pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate study.

With this financial aid, candidates can remove their financial barriers and fulfill their academic and career goals at the University of Sydney. It also eliminates the reliance on loans usually associated with a hefty interest.

Documents Required

The Sydney Scholars India Scholarship program for Indian students requires some mandatory documents for candidates to be considered for financial aid. Some of the papers are:

• Proof of residency showcasing that the student is a current citizen of India
• Unconditional offer letter from the University of Sydney to prove that the candidate has secured admission to the institute

Students in the second year of a program at the university can also apply, provided they possess the required documents.

Important Dates

The window for the Sydney Scholars India Scholarship Program usually begins in April and continues till June, after which the selection procedure begins.

 In 2022, the application began on April 4, 2022, and closed on June 10, 2022.

Selection

The selection committee assesses the candidate’s overall profile to choose the right fit for the scholarship. In this assessment, they consider the academic merit and the personal statement of the candidate based on the details in the application form.

With two academic and non-academic nominees, the selection committee will choose a suitable candidate for the scholarship. Once selected, the candidate cannot terminate the scholarship or reapply for it.
