Research Methodology I
This phase lasts for 2-6 months after the program starts where you write a Concept Paper. The Concept Paper is a summary of a minimum of 2-3 pages and a maximum of six pages that gives a high-level idea of what you’d like to research. It aims to capture your thoughts and ideas and reveal the intended research direction.
The mentor will check the project’s feasibility and give feedback on the topic. However, keep in mind that the concept paper is not an advanced academic paper nor a research proposal.
Research Methodology II
This phase lasts for 2-6 months after you have completed the concept paper where you write the literature review. The literature review should have a minimum of 3-4 pages and a maximum of 15 pages. It should give the theoretical justification and highlight the gap between the past academic knowledge and the existing opportunities for new research.
Keep in mind that the literature review doesn’t necessarily have to be 100% complete at this stage. Once you have completed the literature review, the mentor will review the same.
Research Proposal
This stage lasts for up to 1 year after you have completed the literature review. Here, you have to write the research proposal which should give details about what you will investigate, why it’s important and how you will do it.
Your mentor will review your research proposal and send it to the Research Committee which approves it. Keep in mind that your research proposal should only use the provided template. It would have the Cover Page, Introduction, Literature Review, Research Design, and Reference List.
Thesis Writing
This is the final stage of the DBA program which lasts up to one after you have completed the literature review. There’s a stark difference between being a manager and a strategist. Many people dream of entering the C-suite but don’t know how to achieve the same. This article will throw light on how you can achieve this dream and explain why it’s worth the effort.
We’ll explore the reasons why you should transition from manager to strategist first and then delve deeper into how to become a strategist in India:
Why Make the Transition From Manager to Strategist
Transitioning from manager to strategist might seem like a herculean task to some people. After all, such a transition requires effort, dedication, and commitment. However, there are many reasons why you should focus on making this transition.
1. Better Growth Prospects
Every promotion opens new doors of opportunity. The same is true for becoming a strategist from being a manager. Such a transition will advance your career to a new level and give you a ton of new opportunities.
Having new opportunities can help you plan your career better and make smarter decisions regarding your future. You’d be able to network with business leaders, make bigger decisions, and handle more responsibilities once you enter the C-suite.
2. New Role, New Challenges
You can’t grow professionally if you don’t face new challenges. If working as a manager seems easy to you and you want to take on novel issues, you should pursue this role.
As a strategist, you’ll be facing new challenges and developing solutions for the same. It would allow you to develop both professionally and personally as you’ll be exploring new domains and taking on different aspects of the business.
If you like to have a little zing in your life, you must focus on becoming a strategist.
3. Higher Pay
The pay difference between manager and strategist is a big one. The difference in paychecks alone can be sufficient to make you switch roles and pursue a promotion.
The average salary of a business manager in India is INR 8.5 lakh per annum. Pay for this role ranges from INR INR 3.03 lakh per year and goes up to INR 20 lakh per annum. On the other hand, the average pay of a corporate strategy manager in India is INR 19.75 lakh per annum, which is double the average of a business manager’s pay.
The income of a corporate strategy manager ranges from INR 6.26 lakh per annum and goes up to INR 30 lakh per annum.
We can easily say that there’s no reason why a person shouldn’t strive to become a strategist as a management professional. Becoming a strategist will unlock new opportunities, improve your financial status, and help you become a better professional.
How to Become a Strategist in India
The role of a strategist is a very intricate one. As a strategist, you’ll be responsible for developing strategic plans that help the organization reach its goals and increase profits.
You’ll have to review the existing strategies of your organization and determine how well they have been working out for your business. Due to the advanced nature of this role, companies look for highly skilled and qualified candidates for becoming their strategist.
Strategists are experts in management and other domains of business. Hence, if you want to become a strategist in India, the best way to do so is through taking a Doctor of Business Administration course.
Taking a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) course will equip you with the expertise you need to pursue such an advanced role. It will help you stand out from your peers and become a sought-after professional.
It will put you at a competitive advance as you’ll learn advanced managerial skills designed for upper management and leadership roles. Moreover, a DBA degree is an advanced degree that’s both professional and academic.
Getting a doctorate in management will also help you network with other advanced management professionals, allowing you to make professional progress faster.

It usually has core requirements, a research component, electives and a final project such as a short booklet, peer-reviewed journal articles or a dissertation project.
The dissertation project is a must to complete a DBA as it allows you to demonstrate your advanced knowledge and prove that you’re adding to the body of knowledge.
Most people who take a DBA program are working professionals so the program should be part-time and flexible instead of requiring the student to leave their job for studies.
A proper DBA program will equip its students with the ability to conduct quality research and develop advanced skills related to crucial domains such as communication and technology.
Why Get a Doctor of Business Administration
There are many benefits to joining a DBA program. The following are the most prominent ones amongst them:
Stand out Among the Competition
Having a DBA will help you stand out among the numerous MBA professionals. In the current highly competitive industry, being able to stand out from your peers will put you at a great advantage.
First, it ensures that you can easily bag senior roles in your organization. Companies prefer having a domain expert in a senior role, and with a DBA qualification, you’d be a suitable candidate.
Having a DBA shows that you’re dedicated to professional and personal growth. DBA graduates take the edge over MBA graduates as they are rare and more qualified.
Specialize in your Field
If you’re interested in learning more about your specific domain, then getting a DBA will help you a lot. DBA courses are made to help a candidate learn the advanced concepts of their chosen field and become a thought leader in that sector.
These courses focus on helping you specialize in your field by helping you develop a deeper understanding of that field’s different aspects. Reputed DBA programs offer multiple specializations. For example, upGrad’s DBA program offers specializations in numerous sectors such as Machine Learning, Data Science, Finance, Technology Entrepreneurship, Business Analytics, and many others.
An In-Demand Qualification
Not many people have heard of a doctor of business administration program. So you can understand just how few people are actually pursuing a DBA program currently. It’s a highly advanced program and requires the candidate to have ample work experience and knowledge of their field.
Due to these reasons, there’s a shortage of DBA professionals in the market. There’s a global demand for professionals that have this qualification. Companies want highly specialized and experienced management professionals who can help them solve the complicated business problems of modern industries and accelerate their growth.
Phenomenal Pay
According to PayScale, the average pay for a doctorate in business administration professional is INR 26.77 lakh per annum. In contrast, the average MBA salary in India is around INR 7 lakh per annum. This means the average pay of a DBA professional is nearly four times the average pay of an MBA professional.
If you want a better paycheck and enhance your financial prospects, getting a doctor of business administration would be the best thing to do. You’ll become eligible for senior management roles in different organizations once you have a DBA qualification such as Senior Marketing Manager, Information Security Manager, CEO, etc.
Succeed in your Business
Maybe you aren’t interested in attracting employers but want to start your own business. Completing a DBA course will teach you the latest business and management skills you need to run a business. You will be an expert in your industry, which will help you solve your business’s problems quickly and effectively. It would also help you make better-informed decisions and organize the different departments of your business efficiently.
Not only does a DBA program make you a specialist in a domain, but it also makes you familiar with the advanced concepts of business and management. Another added advantage is that you wouldn’t have any difficulties in attracting investors to your company. Investors and stakeholders would trust you more than your competitors due to your qualification and domain knowledge.

What is the difference between a doctorate (PhD) and a DBA?
You might already have several years of work experience and a postgraduate degree. Perhaps even an MBA.
How do you then stand out from the crowd in a rapidly changing world and prove to employers that you are the right one to hire?
You can show your extensive work history or your track record. You could ask your network for recommendations. You could gain skills and certifications or a degree that’s even more prestigious than an MBA.
If you choose the latter, you could go down the route of a PhD, spend some years doing research and come up with your own unique theory and framework.
Or, you could do a DBA.
What is the difference between a PhD and a DBA?
A Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD), is a type of a doctorate degree, and perhaps the most common doctorate awarded.
It can be awarded in almost any subject and is achieved after three to four years of full-time research or five to seven years of part time research culminating in the presentation of a new theory or idea in the field.
A Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), on the other hand, is a specialised doctorate in Business. It requires the student to undertake research to present solutions to problems, often ones that they’ve experienced within their own businesses or places of employment.
While a PhD is most suited to academics, a DBA keeps working professionals in mind, even though there can be some crossover between both.
Both of the degrees award a Doctorate upon completion and are equal in rank, title and prestige.
Should I do a DBA or a PhD?
A PhD can be in any field. It is purely research based, and extensive time will be spent developing a new idea or framework where there is a gap in existing knowledge. It is especially suited towards academics or aspiring academics.
A DBA on the other hand is tailored towards business professionals with some work experience who want to move up within an organisation and break into management positions.
Coursework is a combination of taught components and research. A student will combine scientific research, theory and professional experience to work on a business problem in an area such as leadership, decision-making, global change etc.
What qualifications do I need for a DBA or a PhD?
A PhD often requires a Master’s degree or an M.Phil, particularly if it’s a PhD in an arts or humanities field. Admissions criteria are different depending on the institution, but a key part of the PhD admissions process is finding a supervisor with expertise in or doing research in the area that you’d like to study.
A DBA, surprisingly, depending on the institution, can be done straight after a Bachelor’s with some work experience. You could potentially skip the time and cost of an MBA or a Master’s degree entirely!
How will a DBA or a PhD affect my career progression?
A PhD, being a more academic degree, is better suited to someone who would like to develop process and policy, or even teach, particularly in a research or academic institution. Read more about the career opportunities after PhD in India.
A DBA with its practical, problem-solving nature, often attracts management or aspiring candidates hoping to break into top level management positions within the field of business.
Due to this, it’s likely that a DBA holder will trend towards higher paid upper-level management jobs within businesses and corporations.
Deciding between a DBA or a PhD depends hugely on your individual circumstances and what you want to achieve in your future career.
As a working professional, if you are looking at adding a Doctor title to your name, we would recommend DBA over PhD. A DBA program allows you to do the same and has a flexible industry-oriented approach rather than an academic approach taken by PhD. However, DBA won’t help you to earn a professor title at a UGC-approved institution since that will require a PhD.
Here’s why we think the SSBM DBA degree powered by upGrad is a great choice for driven executives.
It is the most effective way to continue scaling the corporate ladder without sacrificing continuity in career or time.

How can business and tech leaders acquire a doctorate and get a ‘Dr.’ prefix before one’s name?
We were attending a conference of business leaders in Germany when I noticed a curious thing. Of the 50 odd CXOs and senior management folks I met during the conference; a vast majority introduced themselves with a Dr. prefix before their name. When I enquired about this to a colleague in the Berlin office who also had a doctorate, she explained to me how Doctorate is seen as the highest level of expertise a person can have in their field of employment in Germany and Western Europe.
Even more curious, I asked her why a business leader or a tech leader spends so much of their energy getting a doctorate; isn’t that for academicians? She laughed and told me that it is just one of the ways to get a ‘Dr’ prefix before one’s name!
For an economy over-indexed towards specialization and a nation obsessed with perfection, there is no better way to signal one’s expertise and climb the echelons of a corporate career than getting a doctorate. The truth is that there are multiple ways of acquiring a doctorate degree for business and tech leaders.
It is through a DBA or Doctor of Business Administration, which is the preferred route since one can easily pursue a DBA while working. Universities across Europe offer DBAs since there are so many takers and have hence created a curriculum that can be managed alongside one’s tight schedule at work. Internationally accepted and common ways of pursuing a doctorate world over include Ph.D.: Doctor of Philosophy, DBA: Doctor of Business Administration, EdD: Doctor of Education, MD: Doctor of Medicine, and EngD: Doctor of Engineering.
Germany, every year, churns out 29,000 doctorates and the vast majority of them join their industry. It is this pedigree of leaders with deep thinking ability and an eye for detail that ensures that the German industry and businesses are high on innovation. In fact, Berlin has one of the most dynamic startup cultures in Europe with companies making a global impact.
Interestingly the German & European education systems have figured out ways of letting people enter the employment phase early, while allowing them to upskill in parallel pursuing Master’s and Doctorate while working. This is where a DBA or Doctorate in Business Administration becomes a phenomenal idea. Multiple top Universities across Europe- especially the UK, Germany, and Switzerland have started offering DBA to business and tech leaders and ones aspiring to be one, allowing them to super specialize in their domains.
Individual doctorate programs which have a combination of thesis and instruction led curriculum ensures one can pursue the program in the subject one is already working on and hence reducing the additional pressure. Another best part is that these programs have evolved to majorly online, allowing even international students to pursue the same.
Such an idea will be greatly beneficial to our country where we have so much of a dearth of highly qualified people, not because of the lack of energy or enterprise but just the lack of options. With DBA degree courses available on online platforms like ours, make it easily accessible and offer a good return on investment as compared to an offline degree.
This course is carefully designed for working professionals who are looking for a transition into the C-suite and senior management roles while looking at becoming experts in their domain of choice. The professional doctorate degree also allows candidates to practice in the field and advance to leadership positions.
With the help of such online DBA programs, India can also have an increased number of Doctors from business and tech-driven roles who have the coveted ‘Dr.’ title to their name in record time. As a nation, our strength is our people, the best human resource available across the world who can solve complex problems in record time. All we need to do is to arm them further with courses and opportunities like this that are on par with other western countries.
