The University of Michigan is one of the leading public research universities in United States, known for its academic excellence, world-class faculty, and strong research opportunities. Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, it attracts talented students from across US and around the world. With an estimated University of Michigan acceptance rate of around 12.5%, admission is highly competitive, making strong academic performance and extracurricular involvement important for applicants.

For Fall 2026 admissions, the University of Michigan received more than 115,000 applications, the largest applicant pool in its history. While the university has not yet released official admission figures for the Class of 2030, current estimates suggest that only a limited percentage of applicants were offered admission. The university has confirmed that the incoming first-year class will comprise more than 8,100 students, reflecting its continued popularity among domestic and international applicants.

University of Michigan Admission Trends Over the Years

The University of Michigan acceptance rate is variable from one year to the next. The number of students who apply is one of the major reasons. If there are more students than there are seats then it will be more competitive.

In recent years, there has been a significant rise in the number of applicants to the University of Michigan. There were 45% more applications received for first years over five years, according to the university, and over 115,000 applications were made for both the 2025-26 and 2026-27 admission cycles.

Here's a peek at recent changes in admissions:

Admission CycleApplications ReceivedStudents AdmittedAcceptance Rate
Class of 202684,28914,91417.7%
Class of 202787,63215,72217.9%
Class of 202898,31015,37315.6%
Class of 2029109,11217,91516.4%
Class of 2030115,000+14,375 (approximately)12.5% (approximately)

The Class of 2030 total is an estimate as the University of Michigan has confirmed the number of applicants but has yet to announce the number of students who were admitted to the class. The university has stated the number of applicants for the first year is over 115,000, and there will be over 8,100 students in the first year.

The trend in admissions reflects an increase in competition. The college received 84,000 applications for the Class of 2026, but 115,000+ applications for the Class of 2030.

There are a number of simple reasons for an admission rate to vary: More students apply:

  • More students apply: When more students apply, more people compete for the limited spots available.
  • Limited Seats: The university only has a number of seats for each class.
  • Growing popularity: The popularity of the University of Michigan has increased with a growing number of students wanting to study at the university due to its reputation and academic strength.
  • Different application rules: Application plans and testing plans may change, which may impact the number of applications received.
  • Popular programs: Many applicants may apply to subjects like business, engineering, computer science etc., subjects in which many students are interested.
  • International demand: Students from around the world also apply and compete for the available places in the program as part of international demand.

The latest numbers show that the acceptance rate of University of Michigan is becoming harder to predict because application numbers continue to grow.

Early Action vs Regular Decision Acceptance Rate at the University of Michigan

The University of Michigan has three application plans for their first-year courses: Early Decision, Early Action, or Regular Decision.

Early Decision is a new program the university implemented for the first time in Fall 2026. Early Decision is binding, which means students who are admitted and choose this plan agree to attend the University of Michigan, subject to the university's rules.

There is a difference with Early Action. It doesn't bind the student and they get an answer to it earlier, so they can think over if they wish to apply to other universities.

We don't have an official University of Michigan acceptance rate early action. Students need to be careful of websites that state one definite Early Action acceptance rate but fail to explain how this was achieved.

Decision PlanApproximate Applications and AdmitsApproximate Acceptance Rate
Early Action (Non-Binding)70,000-75,000 applicants / 10,000-11,000 admitted14%-16%
Regular Decision40,000-45,000 applicants / 3,300-4,300 admitted8%-10%
Overall Class of 2030115,000+ applicants / 14,375 admitted12.5%

The University of Michigan acceptance rate early action should not be treated as a guaranteed advantage. Applying early simply means that your application is reviewed in an early application round.

Early Action can still be useful because students receive their decisions earlier. This gives them more time to plan for college and compare other admission and financial aid offers.

Things to know before applying early:

  • You apply sooner: Your application must be ready by November 1.
  • You hear back sooner: Early Action students receive decisions earlier than Regular Decision students.
  • Don't lock into Early Action: Consider other universities as well.
  • Early Decisions are binding: The student should only select Early Decision when the University of Michigan is his/her first choice.
  • Identify financial costs: Students should know the financial costs and financial aid before making a final decision.

The university says the same rigorous holistic review is used for all three application plans. Thus, school should aim to send their best application and not necessarily an application plan to attain a particular result.

University of Michigan Admission Requirements for International Students

The University of Michigan acceptance rate for international students is not an easy variable, as the university does not have a single acceptance rate for all international students.

International students are considered for admission in a competitive manner. The university analyzes academic performance, the courses a student has taken, essays, recommendations, activities, and other aspects of the application.

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

Students who apply for a bachelor's degree must include the following:

  • Completed Common Application
  • High school transcript
  • School report
  • Teacher evaluation
  • Required University of Michigan essays
  • SAT or ACT scores
  • English language test scores of students whose requirements are to demonstrate proficiency in English.
  • Information on any extracurricular activities, awards or achievements
  • Additional documents, if necessary, for certain programs

Specifications may vary from college/ school to school.

The University of Michigan is home to several undergraduate schools and colleges such as the College of Literature, Science, and Arts, the College of Engineering, the Ross School of Business, the College of Nursing, and the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Graduate Admission Requirements

The University of Michigan graduate acceptance rate may not be the same for every program. This is because graduate students apply directly to schools and programs. The number of applications can be different and the number of seats available in each program can be different.

Additional requirements for graduate applicants

  • A bachelors or other equivalent qualification
  • Academic transcripts
  • Statement of purpose or personal statement (Check the correct SOP format)
  • Letters of recommendation (Check the correct LOR format)
  • Resume or CV
  • English language test scores
  • GRE scores, if required by the program
  • GMAT or other business test scores, if required
  • Research experience or work experience, where required
  • Portfolio or writing samples for selected programs

This means that the University of Michigan graduate acceptance rate may vary significantly between programs. For example, if you're applying for a program that is only taking a few students, you may struggle to get in compared with one that is getting lots of applicants.

English Language Score Requirements for the University of Michigan

Students coming from overseas who have not studied in English may be required to provide an English proficiency test. This may vary depending on the background and program of the applicant.

TestScore Requirement (Approximately)

SAT, ACT, GRE & GMAT Scores Needed for the University of Michigan

The University of Michigan has a testing policy that enables students to choose whether their SAT or ACT scores will be used in the application process. Student may submit scores if he/she thinks they will supplement and enhance their application.

The university also offered a chance to submit SAT and ACT scores or not for the Fall 2026 applicants. Students who opted in for self-reporting their scores did so. For graduate programs, GRE and GMAT requirements are decided by individual programs.

What GPA Do You Need to Get into the University of Michigan?

There is no specific GPA that is guaranteed for admission to the University of Michigan. There is no guarantee that, “If you achieve this grade point average, you will be admitted.”

Rather, the University considers the student's overall academic performance. It takes into account the student's academic preparation, school subjects, level of difficulty of school subjects, and grades over time.

Students are expected to concentrate on:

  • Strong and consistent grades
  • Challenging subjects
  • Good performance in subjects related to their intended course
  • Academic improvement when possible
  • Overall preparation for university-level study
CriteriaWhat the University of Michigan Looks For
GPANo fixed minimum cutoff, but the average unweighted GPA of admitted students is 3.9-4.0.

  • Challenge yourself: Make a choice in difficult or advanced courses where available.

  • Academic records are not great: Other applicants might have higher grades or tougher courses.
  • Not enough challenge in coursework: Students might not have studied the most challenging courses available to their choice.
  • Too general essays: The essays may not represent the student's interests and goals.

  • No clear academic direction: The application may not show a clear connection between the student's interests and chosen program.
  • Program competition is high: Some schools and programs receive many more applications than the number of available seats.
  • Documents are missing: An incomplete application can create problems during review.
