The main San Marcos campus of Texas State University is situated in the southern portion of the Austin metropolitan area, and the Round Rock campus is situated in the northern portion. The institution has expanded to become one of the biggest in the country since it was founded in 1899. In the autumn semester of 2024, Texas State University attained a record enrollment of 38,500 students, maintaining a trend of enrollment expansion over a number of years.

Situated on 492 acres of hilly terrain, Texas State University's main campus, San Marcos Campus, is made up of 245 buildings in total. Additionally, Round Rock Campus in Greater North Austin serves as a satellite campus for it. Five thousand members of the university community volunteer for the one-day "Bobcat Build" initiative, which is led by students.
