The history of the University of Florida dates back to the early days of state-funded higher education. Gilbert Kingsbury founded the East Florida Seminary in 1853, not long after Governor Thomas Brown signed a measure providing funding.

History of Iowa State University
On March 22, 1858, the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm was founded. The Morrill Act's provision, which was granted to the agricultural college in 1864, was approved by the Iowa Assembly in 1862. In 1872, the inaugural class—24 males and 2 women—graduated. In 1879, Iowa State opened the first state veterinary medical program in the history of the country. The college's official name was changed to Iowa State University of Science and Technology in 1959. The 1895 football victory for Iowa State led to the adoption of the nickname "Cyclone."
