The Master of Educational Psychology is for students who want to work in a range of educational settings upon graduation. These settings include being in schools as a psychologist, student counsellor or welfare coordinator. Or within agencies treating children with emotional and behavioural difficulties or aged care. One of only four educational psychology courses in the country, our highly regarded Master of Educational Psychology will prepare you to work as a registered psychologist supporting individuals with developmental and learning issues. The course will provide you with valuable skills in counselling, psychological assessment, research methods, intervention, group work, consultation and multidisciplinary team work.

This 2-year full-time program will equip you with core professional skills and knowledge required to practise competently as a psychologist. You may choose to specialise in counselling psychology, health psychology or sport and exercise psychology. By undertaking this program, you'll develop core professional competencies, including skills in counselling, behaviour change and psychological assessment. You'll also understand the ethical issues and professional standards relevant to the practice of psychology. You'll complete a range of advanced coursework in your chosen specialisation, an applied psychology research project supervised by highly trained staff, and specialist and generalist placements. You'll undertake 1000 hours of supervised clinical placements in a range of organisations, including community service, government, hospitals, healthcare providers and private practice. The program is recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia as providing suitable training towards eligibility for general registration as a psychologist. The Master of Industrial and Organisational Psychology is a two-year full-time psychology course that includes nine coursework units, a research project and 1000 hours of practical placement spread over three different settings. Industrial and Organisational Psychology is a specialist area that applies psychological knowledge and skills to workplaces with the aim of improving organisational effectiveness and the quality of work life. The specialty focuses on deriving principles of individual, group and organisational behaviour and applying this knowledge to the solution of problems at work. The skills developed are in line with the essential core capabilities and attributes required by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and the Australian Psychological Society's (APS) College of Organisational Psychologists for postgraduate professional courses.

This course is intended for registered clinical psychologists, or students who have completed a registrable psychology degree, who wish to pursue a career in research or gain a competitive advantage in their career by completing an additional postgraduate qualification. Students gain research skills and expertise in their area of research interest, and demonstrate their outstanding academic ability and commitment to clinical psychology through the completion of the degree. This course provides students the opportunity to work with leading national and international researchers in their area of interest to develop and complete an original research project which contributes to knowledge. Students gain research training and skills, as well as developing extensive knowledge and expertise in an area of research. Students are supported by a strong and vibrant research culture, both within the school and the university, and have access to other researchers, a wide variety of workshops, the university library and research facilities.

As researchers, psychologists seek to understand human behaviour and the way our minds function. The combination of internationally renowned academics, various research centres, groups, clinics, and world-class resources and facilities means the Department of Psychology has a strong research capacity and publication history. The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is an ungraded degree awarded for research that demonstrates that the candidate has made a contribution to knowledge in a particular field of study by presenting new facts or by demonstrating an independent critical ability to evaluate existing material in a new light.

This course is for graduates of a four-year accredited psychology program. The primary aim is to provide a 5th year of supervised practice and structured learning to prepare candidates for a final year of supervised internship in the field of psychological practice, prior to applying for general registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia. The Master of Professional Psychology provides one year of full-time education in the professional practice of psychology that: forms the foundation for professional practice, building on the existing knowledge and skills base acquired as part of an APAC-accredited (Australian Psychology Accreditation Council) four-year undergraduate course; takes an evidence-based approach based to the scientist-practitioner model; is broad and generalist in nature; and grounds the core professional competencies as outlined in the APAC accreditation standards. Teaching methods include a combination of lectures, workshops, skills training, on-line and supervised work-based practicums, both at the University's Northfields Psychology Clinic and at external placements. The emphasis is on skills training and includes demonstration sessions, audio-visual recording of assessment and therapy, case presentations, role-play activities and feedback and reflection.

The School of Health and Biomedical Sciences conducts research in the area of ageing and chronic disease, including: dementia, depression and cognitive impairment in chronic disease early-life determinants of chronic disease hearing loss and tinnitus postural balance and dizziness in the elderly sleep disorders.
