As computer-delivered tests appear nearly every day and paper-based tests are offered on predetermined dates, candidates can choose at their own discretion, but at the same time, it is their duty to book early. Keep in mind that it can take 3 to 5 days (computer-based) or 13 days (paper-based) to get results, and universities, visa offices, and employers can be very strict in deadline constraints. 

In case you are targeting overseas study or immigration, you should schedule your IELTS test in line with application dates, visa application criteria, and your individual level of preparation. The trick is to reserve at least 2 to 3 months beforehand, and then you have some time to reschedule or face unforeseen roadblocks.
