Q. Can a student get multiple scholarships?

Can a student get multiple scholarships to study in Canada? It’s a common myth that winning one scholarship disqualifies you from others. In reality, as long as each scholarship’s terms allow it, students - including those from abroad - can receive funding from more than one source.

Many universities, government programs, and private organizations offer awards that can be combined to cover tuition, housing, and other living costs. The important step is to check each scholarship’s conditions - a few may restrict additional funding, but most don’t.

There are multiple scholarship options for international students in Canada, including:

  • National programs like the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
  • University awards such as the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship
  • External grants by private organizations based on merit, financial need, or area of study

Many awards share eligibility criteria - like academic merit or leadership - so it’s possible to apply for several with a single strong profile.

Do note that some scholarships are for specific groups, such as students with disabilities or those from underrepresented communities. These special-category awards may have different application criteria and deadlines.

Most Canadian institutions support what’s called “scholarship stacking.” This allows students to hold more than one scholarship at the same time - for example, an entrance award, a departmental scholarship, and a private grant. Some schools may ask you to report other funding, so it’s always a good idea to check with their financial aid office.

So, can a student get multiple scholarships? In most cases, yes. Since international students often face higher education costs in Canada, it is suggested to explore all available scholarships. Organize your deadlines, follow the rules, and treat each application seriously. For international students in Canada, applying broadly and staying organized can go a long way toward easing financial pressure.
