Important Tips for IELTS General Writing Task 2

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the world’s popular English language tests that gauge the English proficiency among non-native English speakers seeking to study and work abroad. IELTS has two modules: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The IELTS examination is planned to test the English language skills in four main areas: speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills. The General Training examination is meant for work and immigration purposes. The General Training Writing section has two tasks, out of which Task 2 is a descriptive essay-type question based on sociocultural affairs and contemporary social issues.

The IELTS General Writing Task 2 section focuses on evaluating the applicant’s ability to write a response that is in sync with the terms of content, ideas, and accuracy of vocabulary and grammar. IELTS Writing Task 2 is the second part of the writing test, where the test applicants are asked to write an essay on a given point of view, an issue, or an argument. 

A topic would be given for essay questions in writing task 2, and the content of the essay should be relevant to the question asked. The test applicants need to offer opinions, reasons behind arguments and opinions, and the writing should be grammatically correct. The essay should be written in a formal style, at least 250 words in length and one should aim to complete it in under 40 minutes.  

IELTS General Writing Task 2 Tips

• The vocabulary should be strong. It is not possible to mug up the entire dictionary, so when students are not able to understand the meaning of a particular word, they should try to understand the meaning of the words and sentences to find a cue. 
• Plan and organize the essay so that it is coherent and clear. The essay drafted by students should be completely in sync and relevant to the question asked. Do not beat around the bush, and try to draft the ideas, argument, response, and information within 250 words. 
• Complete the essay. A proper introduction, body, and conclusion should be maintained. A formal structure and format, as asked, should be drafted. Organize the entire 250-word essay into small paragraphs to increase readability. 
• The essay should be written in a logically organized manner with supportive facts and a clear expression of ideas. Always refrain from writing anything illogical and irrelevant. 
• Try to fully understand the question well before writing it to find out what the examiner is expecting out of that question. 
• Use the right words in the introduction. The introduction is an important part that gives a clear idea to the examiner what the essay is all about. 
• Applicants must time themselves and practice several common sample essay topics. The writing speed, structure, and vocabulary will increase with practice and consistency.
