How to Get Student Visa for Australia? Subclass, Requirements, Fees & More

Australia is well-known for its outstanding universities, modern infrastructure, and dynamic lifestyle. If you aspire to study at an Australian university, you should meet specific requirements and understand the necessary processes. One of the most vital requirements is a student visa. The Australian government offers an opportunity to all Indian students and students from other countries to study there. So, it is not very difficult to obtain an Australia visa for Indians.

The student visa Australia you need depends on the course type you want to pursue, the course level, and the program duration. You should be enrolled in a full-time course at a recognised educational institution in Australia. But is that all that is required?

Let’s go through different steps that fulfil the Australia study visa requirements.

Subclass

Various subclasses of visas exist, but you need to apply for a particular subclass based on the type of program, duration of stay, and age. Usually, international students aspiring to pursue higher education in Australia apply for the Australian Student Visa Subclass 500. It is mandatory irrespective of the field of study chosen.

You can apply for it after you have joined a full-time study program. Note that through this visa, you can stay as long as you need and as per your enrollment. The subclass 500 student visa Australia lets you study, work, and live in Australia for up to 5 years, per your course.

This visa enables learners to work a maximum of 40 hours per two weeks during their college term. While on school breaks, you are eligible to work for unlimited hours. Presently, students can begin working immediately after they arrive in Australia without waiting for the course duration to begin.

The list of the type of studies covered under Australian Student Visa Subclass 500 is as follows:

  • Higher Education
  • Vocational Education and Training
  • Primary and Secondary Schools
  • Independent English Language Intensive Courses for international learners
  • Postgraduate Research
  • Non-awards Courses

Eligibility Criteria for Australian Student Visa Subclass 500

  • You need to register for a course of study in Australia.
  • You must belong to one of the exemption categories or must have Overseas Student Health Coverage (OSHC).
  • You must provide documentation of your welfare arrangement if your age is below 18 years.
  • If you are living in Australia, you are in ownership of a substantive legal visa. If you are provided with another substantive visa, your existing visa is null and cancelled.

Scope of Subclass 500 Visa

  • You are independent to enrol in the study program and the university of your choice.
  • Dependents may need to be presented for a dependent visa to include the primary applicant on a trip.
  • You can apply from inside or outside of Australia via an online portal.
  • The visa process is uniform for all students.
  • Family members may arrive with you in Australia.

Requirements

The following Australia study visa requirements must be fulfilled if you want to study in the country.

1) Attach the Letter of Offer

Before applying for a student visa in Australia, you should get a Letter of Offer authorising your acceptance into a course mentioned on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions of Courses.

The Letter of Offer contains course information, fee details(fees to be paid if you accept that Letter of Offer), and enrolment requirements, which are required to be attached to your visa application.  You also need to be aware of the refund policy.

2) Confirm enrolment through CoE

Your education institution issues a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) document. It authenticates your enrollment in the particular course. Note that you will receive the CoE after accepting the Letter of Offer and paying the deposit fees.

You should be registered at the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). If you are applying from a country other than Australia, your student visa Australia application must be submitted with a CoE for each course. Including a copy of CoE with your Australian study visa application is vital to ascertain your registration under a course.

3) Provide English Proficiency evidence

Educational courses in Australia are delivered in English. So, you must provide a scorecard from any accepted English language proficiency test if you are not a native English speaker. The corresponding certificate will demonstrate that you possess the required English proficiency level to enrol in a particular course.

You can go through studying and training visas to get further information and know the English language requisites.

4) Meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement

You should write a statement mentioning the following criteria to fulfil the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement.

(i) Your intent for arriving in Australia must be study related only.

(ii) Your stay in Australia temporarily (your visa must not be extended).

The statement must also cite your connection to your home country and how worthwhile the course is in context to your career aspirations.

On the occasion of the unavailability of OSFC, the student visa application will be rejected. Interested candidates can find more details on the OSHC cover here.

6) Pass health examinations

All overseas students must be healthy before arriving in the country. So, you must pass a health examination and attach a medical certificate to your visa application authorising you to fulfil their health-related Australia study visa requirements.

7) Pass the character assessment

You need to answer certain fundamental questions in context to your character when filling out your Australian study visa application. You may need to attach a background check run by local police officials in certain cases. You can get more details on character requirements here.

8) Provide proof of adequate funds

You can get a student visa in Australia if you prove that you have enough funds to pay for your stay throughout the course. You can provide proof of adequate funds in the following ways:

  • Present bank statements and proof of scholarships
  • Present proof of your partner’s or parent’s annual income; it must be INR 34-35,00,000 (AUD 62,222) in the year you apply. The annual income must be INR 41-42,00,000 (AUD 72,592) if your family stays with you.
