What is a good SAT score? If you are pondering over this question, then here is a simple answer. A good score is one that surpasses the average SAT score for a particular year. For example, it was 1050 in 2022 while coming down to 1028 in 2023. From this perspective, 1300 or 1200 SAT scores may help you earn a place at top global institutions. Let us look at the SAT requirements of some of these universities to get a better idea.

List of Universities Accepting SAT scores

Here is a list of the world’s top universities as per the QS World University Rankings 2024.

University Name QS WUR 2024 Location SAT Score Required
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 1 Cambridge, USA 1520-1580
University of Cambridge 2 Cambridge, UK 1460-1500
University of Oxford 3 Oxford, UK 1480
Harvard University 4 Cambridge, USA There are no score cut-offs, and aspirants may apply without standardized test scores
Stanford University 5 Stanford, USA Standardized test scores are not required
Imperial College, London 6 London, UK Not accepted. Instead, 3-4 AP tests with scores of 5 are accepted
National University of Singapore 8 Singapore 1250
UCL (University College, London) 9 London, UK 1280-1440
University of California, Berkeley 10 Berkeley, USA 1340-1540
University of Chicago 11 Chicago, USA 1080-1600

Obtaining a 1200 SAT score will not be enough when you are applying to some of the world’s top universities and colleges for your undergraduate studies. However, one of the positives today is that several leading universities do not have SAT cut-offs or minimum requirements, while some do not require standardized test scores altogether.

Hence, do your homework on the institutions where you can submit your application without needing to provide SAT scores or find those that accept scores of 1200. For instance, in the last batch of admissions at the University of Chicago, while the median score was higher, the lowest SAT score for admitted students was 1080. So, there is always an opportunity to get into a reputed institution with a comparatively lower SAT score if you meet all the other requirements.
