How to Calculate IELTS Band Scores 2025?

The IELTS Band Score 2025 is given on a scale of 1 to 9, for each of the four sections – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Along with these individual scores, you will also get an overall IELTS band score.

Your IELTS score is calculated by taking the average of all four section scores. It’s a simple calculation – just add all your four band scores and divide the total by 4. The result is your overall band score.

Score Calculation:

Your IELTS overall score is calculated by averaging your four section scores.

  • Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking scores are each rated on a 0-9 scale.
  • The overall band score is the mean of the four scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5 or whole band.

Example: If you score 7.5 in Listening, 7.0 in Reading, 6.5 in Writing, and 7.0 in Speaking, your overall score is: (7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 7.0

IELTS Band Score Example

Section Score
Listening 7.5
Reading 7.0
Writing 6.0
Speaking 6.5
Total 27.0
Average 27 ÷ 4 = 6.75
Final Band Score 7.0

IELTS Score Re-Evaluation

Check details of IELTS IELTS EOR below:

Enquiry on Results (EOR)

If you believe your IELTS exam results do not accurately reflect your performance, you can apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR), a formal re-evaluation process where your test is re-marked by a senior examiner.

Key Details About the IELTS Re-Mark Process:

  • Application Deadline: You must apply for a re-mark within 6 weeks (42 days) of your test date.
  • Sections Eligible for Re-Marking: You can request a re-evaluation of one or all four sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking).
  • Processing Time: The EOR process takes 2 to 21 days, depending on demand and examiner availability.
  • Re-Marking Fee: The cost varies by test center. However, if your score increases, you will receive a full refund of the re-evaluation fee.
  • Final Decision: The new score, whether increased or unchanged, is considered final and cannot be appealed further.

How to Apply for an IELTS Score Re-Evaluation?

  • Visit your test center’s website and fill out the EOR application form.
  • Select the modules (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) you want re-marked.
  • Pay the re-marking fee, which is refunded if your score improves.
  • Await your updated results via email or through the IELTS test taker portal.

When Should You Consider an IELTS Re-Mark?

  • If your Writing or Speaking scores are significantly lower than expected.
  • If you consistently scored higher in practice tests but received a lower-than-expected band.
  • If your total score is just below the required band score for university admission or visa approval.

Before applying for a score re-evaluation, ensure you compare your performance with the official IELTS band descriptors to determine if a re-mark is likely to improve your result.

How Long is IELTS Result Valid?

The IELTS result validity is 2 years from the test date. During this period, candidates can use their IELTS scores for study, migration, or work purposes and also send their scores to multiple universities.

IELTS Score Validity – How Long Are Results Accepted?

  • Standard Validity: Your IELTS score is valid for 2 years from the test date. Universities, employers, and immigration bodies use this period to assess your English proficiency.
  • Institution-Specific Policies: Some universities, visa authorities, and professional bodies may require a more recent IELTS score, typically within one year of application. Always check the specific requirements of your target institution.
  • Expired IELTS Scores: If your IELTS exam results expire, you must retake the test to submit a valid score. There is no provision for score extensions.

What after Receiving Your IELTS Results?

Once you receive your IELTS exam results, the next steps depend on whether you achieved your target band score. If your score meets the requirements, you can proceed with your applications.

However, if the results are unsatisfactory, you may need to consider re-taking the IELTS or improving your skills for a higher score. Below, we outline what you should do based on your IELTS performance.

What to Do If Your IELTS Score Is Unsatisfactory

If your IELTS exam results do not meet the required band score for your university, job, or visa application, consider the following steps:

  • Evaluate Your Score Report: Identify the weak sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) and analyze where improvement is needed.
  • Consider a Re-Mark (EOR): If you believe your score does not reflect your performance, apply for an Enquiry on Results (EOR) within 6 weeks of your test date.
  • Retake the IELTS: If re-evaluation does not yield the desired results, book a re-test after thorough preparation.
  • Use Official Study Resources: Prepare with IELTS practice tests, past papers, and examiner feedback to improve weak areas.
  • Enroll in IELTS Coaching Classes: Consider professional IELTS preparation courses for expert guidance on improving band scores.

A higher IELTS score can enhance your admission, scholarship, or visa approval chances, making proper preparation essential before re-attempting the exam.

How to Send IELTS Scores to Universities?

After you get your IELTS result, the next important step is to send your IELTS scores to universities. If you are planning to study abroad, sending your IELTS band scores to the universities is very important for admission.

IDP allows you to send your IELTS score report to five universities for free. But remember, you have to select these universities when you are registering for the IELTS exam. If you want to send to more than five universities, then you will have to pay extra fees.

When can you choose universities?

You can choose the five free universities at the time of your IELTS registration. The details you give during registration will be used by IDP to send your TRF (Test Report Form) automatically after results are out.

If you did not select them during registration, or now want to send to more places, don’t worry — you can still do it by paying extra charges.
