IIT Indore stands out for its strong research orientation, highly qualified faculty, and growing international collaborations. While it was established in 2009 like other new-generation IITs, its pace of development has been notably faster. It has carved a niche in areas like material science, AI, data science, and theoretical physics. Moreover, its consistent NIRF ranking (16th in Engineering in 2024) and increasing placement packages showcase its upward trajectory.
The B.Tech curriculum at IIT Indore is designed with a mix of foundational core courses, departmental specialization, and electives that promote interdisciplinary learning. It includes modern elements such as data science and machine learning even in traditional branches. Students also complete a compulsory research project and are encouraged to participate in internships and semester-long industrial training programs.
The most sought-after course is B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), which consistently records the highest placements. Other popular disciplines include Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and the newly introduced Data Science and Artificial Intelligence programs. On the postgraduate level, M.Tech and M.S. (Research) in Computer Science, Electrical, and Mechanical are in demand.
IIT Indore has shown impressive placement growth in recent years. The average package for B.Tech students reached ₹25.45 LPA, and the highest package offered in 2023 was ₹68 LPA. In the 2025 placement drive (ongoing), more than 88% students were already placed and five students bagged ₹1 Cr+ offers. Top recruiters include Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart, Goldman Sachs, Qualcomm, and Zomato.
The permanent campus at Simrol (40 km from Indore city) spans over 500 acres and features state-of-the-art laboratories, high-performance computing clusters, hostels, lecture halls, libraries, and sports complexes. Facilities like Wi-Fi-enabled hostels, advanced research labs (SAIF), auditoriums, canteens, and dedicated innovation spaces ensure holistic development for students.

Research is a core strength at IIT Indore. The institution runs over 150 funded research projects, collaborates with institutions like CERN and BARC, and has MoUs with several global universities. It houses advanced research facilities like the Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF) and promotes innovation through incubation support and research assistantships. The high number of patents and publications further reflects its research prowess.
IIT Indore is fully residential, with separate hostels for boys and girls. Rooms are mostly single occupancy with study tables, almirahs, and high-speed LAN/Wi-Fi. Each hostel has common rooms, sports equipment, water filters, and laundry services. The mess food is diverse and student-reviewed regularly, offering vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Hygiene, safety, and accessibility are priorities in hostel management.
For B.Tech, admission is based on the JEE Advanced rank and JoSAA counseling.
For M.Tech/M.S. (Research), admission is via GATE, and for M.Sc, via IIT JAM.
Ph.D. admissions consider GATE/UGC/CSIR-JRF qualifications and interviews. Each program has specific cutoffs, and IIT Indore follows government reservation norms.
IIT Indore has a vibrant student community with multiple cultural, technical, and sports clubs. Major events include Fluxus (annual techno-cultural fest) and Astronomia, Aranya, and other intra-college fests. Students participate in coding competitions, hackathons, drama, debates, and robotics contests. The Student Gymkhana plays a pivotal role in governance and organizing activities.
While IIT Indore is located on the outskirts of the city (Simrol), it is well-connected by institute buses to Indore city and railway stations.
