At first, the University was mainly responsible for conducting examinations and awarding degrees. During those early years, facilities like a library, museum, and other common resources were not given much focus. It was only after the University got its own permanent building in 1872 that efforts were made to start a library.

The university focuses on higher education in Engineering, Technology, Science, and Humanities. The University of Calcutta has more than 10 Campuses in various parts of Calcutta.
