The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM), Kancheepuram is a public institution established in 2007 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was declared an Institute of National Importance in 2011. Its uniqueness lies in its specific mandate: to provide education and conduct research that emphasizes design and manufacturing. Unlike traditional engineering colleges, it integrates design concepts with core engineering disciplines, creating a niche for itself in product development and innovation. This focus is reflected in its specialized dual-degree programs and dedicated research centers.
IIITDM Kancheepuram offers a variety of specialized B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Des, and Ph.D. programs. At the undergraduate level, students can choose from B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The institute also has unique dual degree programs like B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with a major in Smart Manufacturing and B.Tech in Computer Science with a major in Artificial Intelligence. These programs are designed to provide a holistic understanding of both design and core engineering.
For B.Tech programs, admission is based on the JEE Main examination rank. Students must qualify for the exam and then participate in the JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counseling process for seat allocation. For M.Tech programs, admission is primarily based on a valid GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score, followed by CCMT (Centralized Counseling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan/M.Des) counseling.
The institute has a strong placement record, with its students securing positions at top companies in India and abroad. While placement numbers can fluctuate, recent reports show a high placement percentage for eligible students. In recent years, the highest package offered was ₹32 LPA, while the average package for undergraduate students was around ₹10.80 LPA. Major recruiters include Zoho, Virtusa, Google, and Amazon, among many others. The dual-degree programs often see a higher average package.
IIITDM Kancheepuram has a strong focus on research and development. It houses a Design, Innovation, Incubation & Continuing Education (DIICE) center to foster a culture of entrepreneurship and product design. The institute has several active research projects in a wide range of fields including 5G networks, artificial intelligence, robotics, and medical devices. Faculty members are often engaged in government-funded research projects, and students are encouraged to participate in these projects and in-house competitions.
Campus life is vibrant and student-centric. The institute has over 20 active student-run clubs, including technical clubs like AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) and MARS (Mars Rover Students), and cultural clubs like Footlights (Dance Club) and Quriosity (Quiz Club). These clubs organize various technical and cultural events throughout the year, culminating in major annual festivals, providing a well-rounded educational experience.
The institute maintains a healthy faculty-to-student ratio, which allows for personalized attention and better academic interaction. A significant number of faculty members hold Ph.D. degrees from prestigious institutions like IITs and NITs and are actively involved in research. They are accessible to students for academic guidance and project supervision, which is crucial for the institute's design-centric pedagogy.
IIITDM Kancheepuram has consistently been ranked well in national surveys. In the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) Engineering rankings, the institute has been placed in the 101-150 band for the last few years. This ranking reflects its solid performance in key parameters like teaching, learning, research, and professional practices.
IIITDM Kancheepuram provides on-campus hostel facilities for all its students. The hostels are equipped with essential amenities, including a reading table, chair, and cot, and high-speed internet access. The campus also has a well-stocked library, a central computer center, modern laboratories, a health center with an ambulance service, a gymnasium, and various sports facilities, including courts for basketball, badminton, and tennis.
Yes, entrepreneurship is a key area of focus at IIITDM Kancheepuram. The institute has an in-house incubator, MaDeIT (Manufactured in Design and IT), which supports student startups and provides them with seed funding, mentorship, and office space. This incubator has been instrumental in helping students turn their design-driven ideas into successful businesses.
The campus is located in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu, and spans 51 acres. It is situated on the outskirts of Chennai, which offers both a peaceful, academic environment and access to the city's resources. The campus is well-connected by road, and the nearest major railway station is the Kanchipuram Railway Station, and the nearest airport is the Chennai International Airport.
