The University was initially known as Andhra Pradesh Open University, set up on 26th August 1982 through an Act of the A.P. State Legislature (APOU Act 1982). This was the first open University set up in India.

The placement cell of BRAOU was established in 2022. The cell conducts on-campus interviews, off-campus interviews, and job fairs to provide students with ample opportunities for their career development.
