The University of Mumbai, which was formerly named the University of Bombay, was established in 1857 and is considered to be one of the oldest universities in India. The university only served as an examining and degree-awarding body in the beginning. Teaching departments and research centres were developed later.

The MHT CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test), which is conducted by the State CET Cell, provides the basis for admission to the B.Tech/B.E. programs in Mumbai University. For admission to the MCA program, admission is through MAH MCA CET, and for admission to the MBA/MMS programs, it is made on the basis of MAH MBA CET. Most of the affiliated institutes also consider national tests such as CAT, MAT, CMAT, and XAT for the admissions to their MBA program.
For admissions to BA, BCom, B.Sc., MA, M.Com, and M.Sc., admissions are mostly merit-based, based on marks in the qualifying examination. Doctoral admissions (PhD Courses) are considered via the PET (PhD Entrance Test) administered by Mumbai University with exemption to candidates who hail from UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE, or SET.
Mumbai University does not publish official cutoff data (opening and closing ranks/percentiles) for entrance exams such as MHT CET, MAH MBA CET, or MAH CET Law on its official website. Students are admitted based on the merit lists and seat allotment results released by the State CET Cell, Maharashtra.
