The University of Mumbai, which was formerly named the University of Bombay, was established in 1857 and is considered to be one of the oldest universities in India. The university only served as an examining and degree-awarding body in the beginning. Teaching departments and research centres were developed later.  

Over the course of time, Mumbai University has developed into a prominent center of higher education in India. It provides programs in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Engineering, and Management. Scholarships 2025

The University of Mumbai provides scholarships and financial assistance schemes to needy deserving and reserved category students. The schemes include the Merit Scholarships, Free Studentship, Book Bank and special financial assistance to needy students under its Department of Students’ Development. These scholarships and assistance schemes help to reduce the financial burden in maintenance, lodging, and their education for under when they are in UG, PG or doctoral levels of study. 

Scholarship name 

  • Following are the details of scholarships and financial aid provided by Mumbai University for the economically weaker students:  

Financial Assistance to Students Representing Backward Classes 

  •  For students in categories: SC, ST, NT, DT, SBC. 
  •  Parents’/guardians’ annual income must be less than ₹1,00,000.  
  •  The amount depends on whether you stay in the hostel or not, and whether the course is self-supporting or regular. 

Financial Assistance to Needy Students 

• For economically weaker students (irrespective of caste) with family income less than ₹75,000 per annum.  

 • Only a limited number of applicants per department/college invited based on merit among needy students. 

Book Bank Scheme 

 • For backward class students.  

 • Provides textbooks (and/or access to books via the Book Bank) rather than direct cash.  

Post-Matric Scholarships (Government-of-India / State) for SC/ST/OBC etc. 

 • For reserved category students studying post-matric (UG/PG) courses. 

 • Need valid caste/reservation certificate.  

 • Income ceiling and other criteria vary by scheme.
