SGPA and CGPA are the most significant components to assess the performance of an individual in an assessment. SGPA and CGPA help analyse aspirants’ growth while giving them room for improvement. SGPA and CGPA are used globally for ranking students based on their performances. India still uses a percentage system to calculate the performances of the students. Although certain institutes have opted for the SGPA and CGPA systems, the number of such institutes is significantly low. There are countless methods to calculate the SGPA and CGPA percentage of the student.
Let’s learn about the concepts of CGPA and SGPA and how to calculate percentage from CGPA.
What is SGPA?
SGPA expands to mean Sessional Grade Point Average or Semester Grade Point Average. This helps calculate a student’s score for the entire term or the session. It calculates the average of all the grade points the student in the given semester has secured. It is the cumulative grade given at the end of each session to the student. This helps to understand your progress and motivates you to work on places that might be your weakest link. Every country has a different way of calculating SGPA. It is essential to keep a tab on your SGPA to leave room for improvement.
What is CGPA?
The full form of CGPA is Cumulative Grade Point Average. CGPA is a globally used method to measure the comprehensive academic record of a student. It usually consists of grades like A, B, C, D or F. The grade points are the average of the marks obtained for all the semesters. The marks are given after the given academic term. It is sometimes confused with GPA, which is the Grade Point Average that specifies the assessment of only one term.
Differences Between CGPA and SGPA
Even though these terms are remotely similar, there are some main differences between CGPA and SGPA.
Parameters | CGPA | SGPA |
Time Span | CGPA reflects upon the performance of the individual in one semester. | SGPA is the cumulative average of marks in the entire term. |
Calculating Characteristics | The CGPA can be calculated by multiplying the entire grade score alongside the credit score of each subject or by the total score of credits. It can also be calculated if you divide your SGPA by the total number of semesters you have. | SGPA can be calculated by knowing the earned credit point in all subjects and how much credit is assigned to every one of them. You then have to multiply the credit of each subject with the earned credits of the subject. Add all the points, and further divide the sum by the total of all your credits to know the SGPA earned by you in the entire year. |
Acceptance | It is a globally acclaimed policy to calculate marks. | It is mainly used by international universities to assess student performance. |
How To Convert CGPA Into Percentage?
The calculation of CGPA is easily acceptable throughout the world. The students want to assess their performances based on one particular semester and thereby calculate the SGPA later. Suppose you have an 8.7 CGPA. You must multiply it by 9.5 to convert it into a percentage.
Hence your value will be
8.7X9.5= 82.65.
Your total percentage will be 82.65.
The above method shows you the easiest way how to calculate percentage from CGPA. You can even try to calculate your CGPA with the help of your SGPA as well. For that, you need to know your SGPA.
How To Calculate CGPA Through SGPA?
To calculate your CGPA, you first need the primal knowledge of your SGPA. SGPA is the cumulative sum of the average you have obtained from the entire year. You first need to find the sum of all your SGPAs throughout your academic year, and then you have to divide it by the total number of semesters you have had.
Therefore,
CGPA= (Sum of SGPA of all semesters in a year/ number of semesters).
Taking an example, if your SGPA is 4,6 and 2 in 3 semesters, then your CGPA will be
(4+6+2)/3
= 12/3
=4.
Hence, your CGPA is 4.
How To Calculate SGPA?
The calculation of SGPA is a tad bit tedious. However, it takes minimal time if you follow the steps below.
- Make a list of all your credit and grade points in each subject.
- Multiply the credit points by your grade in each subject. You can even take a median of grades as grades cover a range.
- Add your results together.
- Divide the total score by the sum of the earned credit points.
Here is a practical example of how to calculate your SGPA.
Credit Score | Grades |
Subject A 5. | Subject A- 9. |
Subject B 7 | Subject B 8 |
Subject C 3 | Subject C 7.8 |
(Now multiply the credit points by the grade obtained on the respective subject.)
Subject A: 5X9= 45
Subject B: 7X8= 56
Subject C: 3X7.8= 23.4.
(Add all the subject results together)
Subject A+ Subject B+ Subject C=
45+56+23.4= 124.4.
SGPA formula= points obtained in the semester/ Credits secured in the semester.
Points secured in the semester: 124.4.
Credits secured in the semester: 5+7+3 = 15
SGPA= 124.4/15
= 8.29
Hence the SGPA is 8.29.

Terms that are Used to Calculate SGPA and CGPA
There are plenty of websites that offer ways to calculate CGPA and SGPA. However, it comes with various terminologies associated with this and is standard for both. Some terminologies are not explained properly to the students, which can cause further confusion. Here we have jotted down some common terms for SGPA and CGPA.
Credit Points
Credit points pertain to the workload unit of an individual. Each credit point consists of 25 to 30 hours of work. The credit point given in each model depends on the number of presentations, learning matters and texts to read during the entire semester. You can also gain credit points by simply providing attendance as well. It can also be attained if you just attend a test or a term paper. On average, an individual must complete around 30 credit points each semester.
Grade Points
Grade points are the appraisal an individual gets depending on their achievements. An individual is awarded grade points based upon the subject one studies as a part of their course. In addition, it helps to determine the GPA of an individual after each term.
Semester
Semester precisely speaks about the span of your entire course in a year. It is then divided into segments called semesters that last for six months. You will have two semesters if you are doing a year’s course.
Conclusion
CGPA and SGPA are vital components of any grading system. You need both of these to assess your performance in the semesters. From the above context, you have gained a proper knowledge of how to calculate CGPA percentage. You have also learnt how to calculate your SGPA in a very limited time, which will help you to assess your results in future pursuits.
