The full name of the institute is the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Kalyani. It was established in 2014. 

IIIT Kalyani is recognized as an Institute of National Importance under the IIIT (PPP) Act, 2017. It was established under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, in collaboration with the Government of West Bengal and industry partners like Coal India Ltd., Rolta Foundation, and WEBEL.

IIIT Kalyani offers a variety of programs, including: 

• B.Tech. Programs: 

B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) , B.Tech. in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) , B.Tech. in CSE (AI & Data Science) , and B.Tech. in CSE (Cybersecurity). The two CSE specializations are commencing from 2025. 

• Postgraduate Programs:
• M.Tech. in VLSI and Embedded Systems, also commencing from 2025 , and an Executive Postgraduate Program in AI & Data Science. 

• Ph.D. Programs: 

The institute offers Ph.D. programs in multiple disciplines, including major areas of CSE, ECE, and Basic Sciences. 

IIIT Kalyani is actively involved in cutting-edge research across various disciplines, including inter-disciplinary areas. Key research areas include: 

• CSE: Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Image Understanding, Cryptography, Cryptology, Blockchain Technology, AI and Data Science, Quantum Computing, and Quantum Machine Learning. 

• ECE: Sensor Fabrication, Flexible Bio-electronics, Wireless Communications, Signal Processing, Antenna Design, and Embedded VLSI Design. 

• Basic Science: Elastodynamics, Seismogenic Ionosphere, and Applications of AI/ML in Atmospheric Sciences. 

Yes, the institute has extensive research collaborations and is involved in numerous sponsored projects. It is currently involved in thirteen active projects sponsored by agencies such as DRDO, SERB, MeitY, MOES, and ISRO. The institute has also been awarded 11 Visvesvaraya fellowships to support Ph.D. students. Research collaborations include institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Delhi, Roorkee, and Kharagpur, Jadavpur University, AIIMS Kalyani, and the University of Vigo, Spain. 

The institute is constructing a permanent campus on 34 acres in Kalyani, West Bengal, which is nearing Phase-I completion. The campus is designed for academic and research excellence, featuring state-of-the-art infrastructure, including academic blocks, hostels, laboratories, a 5G testbed under a DoT national initiative, and a green environment. The institute also has computer labs located at Webel IT Park. 

The Training and Placement Cell bridges academia and industry, aligning student skills with organizational needs. The cell ensures a smooth and professional placement experience for recruiters. Students receive strong technical foundations through a rigorous academic curriculum, hands-on projects, and internships. They are also provided with soft skills training and are encouraged to participate in coding contests to enhance their skills. Many final-year students undertake full-semester internships, which offers recruiters a way to assess talent with low risk. 

For the 2024-25 batch, IIIT Kalyani has a consistent placement record of above 89%. The highest package offered was ₹44 LPA. The average package (CTC) was ₹9.27 LPA, and the median package was ₹9 LPA. Students from the institute have excelled across various domains, including software, electronics, AI/ML, and cybersecurity. 

The graduating batch of 2026 reflects a diverse mix of students from across the country. The demographic composition fosters a rich learning environment that enhances collaboration across cultures. About 44% of students come from West Bengal, while the rest are from states like Uttar Pradesh (17.4%), Bihar (13%), Telangana, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.

• Smart India Hackathon: Three teams from the 2026 batch were finalists in the prestigious Smart India Hackathon. 

• Google Summer of Code: Students have actively participated and succeeded in Google Summer of Code, contributing to and winning accolades in open-source projects under Google's mentorship. 

• Competitive Programming: Students have achieved impressive ranks in competitive programming contests like Codeforces, HackerRank, and CodeChef. 

• Flipkart Grid 5.0: A student from the 2025 batch secured a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) from Flipkart Grid 5.0 for outstanding performance. 

IIIT Kalyani is located at Webel IT Park Phase I Building, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal.
