The university was formed by merging four prestigious technical institutions in Chennai: 

• College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG) – Established in 1794 

• Alagappa College of Technology (ACT) – Established in 1944 

• Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) – Established in 1949 

• School of Architecture & Planning (SAP) – Established in 1957 

In recognition of its academic excellence and research contributions, Anna University secured the 20th rank in the NIRF Indian Universities category in 2025.

Anna University offers a wide range of courses in multiple disciplines through its Affiliated Colleges. There are more than 50 courses across the UG, PG, and PhD levels. Anna University does not publish any official cut-off lists for its courses. Admissions are carried out based on entrance examinations and academic qualifications. 

The Centre for Admissions (CFA) at Anna University manages admissions to the university’s key campuses such as CEG, ACT, SAP, and MIT. It coordinates both undergraduate and postgraduate admissions under different categories, including NRI, CIWGC, Foreign Nationals, Consortium of Industries, and Other State quotas. For postgraduate engineering and architecture programs like M.E., M.Tech., M.Arch., and M.Plan, admissions are conducted through the Common Engineering Admission Procedure (CEAP-2025), following Tamil Nadu government guidelines.

The postgraduate admissions follow a similar structured process but include both entrance-based and category-based routes. Candidates applying for M.E., M.Tech., M.Arch., and M.Plan programs are considered through CEAP-2025 using GATE or CEETA–PG scores.

The Centre for Admissions (CFA) manages the admission process for M.E., M.Tech., M.Arch., M.Plan, M.C.A., and MBA programs offered in the University Departments of Anna University. These admissions are conducted under specific categories only, namely Foreign Nationals (FN), Non-Resident Indians (NRI), Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries (CIWGC), and the Consortium of Industries.

Campus & Hostel

Location: Chennai, Tamil Nadu 

The University is located in the southern part of Chennai, about 3 km from Guindy Railway Station and 10 km from Chennai Airport. The main campus spans 189 acres, bordered by the Adyar River to the north and Raj Bhavan to the south. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet serves as the second campus, covering 52 acres, while a third campus at Taramani extends across 5 acres. Together, these campuses house diverse facilities that cater to the academic and administrative needs of the University community.
