The University was initially known as Andhra Pradesh Open University, set up on 26th August 1982 through an Act of the A.P. State Legislature (APOU Act 1982). This was the first open University set up in India. The University was renamed as Dr. B.R.Ambedkar Open University on 26 October 1991 by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

All the programs provided by the institution are recognised by the University Grants Commission. The university provides online courses across multiple specializations as well as online counselling services
