Aligarh Muslim University is located in the historic city of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, about 130 kilometres from Delhi. Its main campus covers over 467 hectares, making it one of the largest university campuses in India. The campus is fully residential and has a distinctive blend of modern academic facilities and heritage buildings that date back to the late nineteenth century. There are 19 halls of residence, each containing multiple hostels, dining areas, common rooms, and sports grounds. This arrangement allows students from across India and abroad to live, study, and take part in cultural and extracurricular activities within a self-contained academic environment. The residential nature of the campus helps create a strong sense of community and provides students with easy access to libraries, laboratories, workshops, sports complexes, and cultural spaces.
The Maulana Azad Library at AMU is regarded as the largest university library in Asia. It is a seven-storey building with modern reading halls, air-conditioned spaces, and separate sections for rare books, research materials, and periodicals. The library holds more than 1.5 million printed books, manuscripts, journals, and digital resources. Students and faculty from every department use it for their academic work, and its rare collection of manuscripts and historical documents attracts researchers from around the world. The library also provides digital access to a wide range of e-books, online journals, and databases. Its peaceful lawns and reading rooms make it a landmark of scholarship on the campus and a place where students spend long hours studying and collaborating on projects.
AMU welcomes students from outside India and has a clear, structured admission process for Non-Resident Indians and international applicants. To apply, students must submit their educational certificates, mark sheets, and proof of birth along with a copy of their passport and recent photographs. Postgraduate applicants need to show their graduation records as well. The university provides detailed guidelines to ensure that students from different education systems can align their qualifications with AMU’s eligibility criteria. This system makes it easier for candidates from various countries to apply and become part of AMU’s multicultural environment. Once admitted, these students can also access special support services to help them settle into campus life and adapt to academic requirements.
For students joining AMU’s online programs, it is essential to have access to a laptop or desktop computer with a stable internet connection. A smartphone with 3G or 4G data can also be used for attending classes, although a larger screen is recommended for ease of study. These requirements enable students to log in to live lectures, download course materials, submit assignments, and take part in discussions without interruption. AMU’s learning management system is designed to be user-friendly so that even those who are new to online learning can navigate it easily. By meeting these basic technical requirements, students can make full use of the flexibility and resources offered in online programs.
Examinations and assessments for AMU’s online programs are held entirely online, making them accessible to students in different locations. The evaluation process combines theoretical exams, regular assignments, practical exercises, and, where applicable, employer-based assessments. This layered approach ensures that students are tested not only on their theoretical understanding but also on how they apply their knowledge in practical situations. Continuous assessment throughout the semester helps keep students engaged and gives them multiple opportunities to improve their performance. By the time the final exams arrive, students have already built up a strong foundation through smaller tests and projects.
Traditional regular courses require students to be physically present in classrooms at fixed times. Correspondence courses provide printed materials and allow students to study on their own but offer little interaction with teachers. AMU’s online programs combine the advantages of both systems. Students receive structured video lectures, live interactions with faculty, recorded sessions to revisit lessons, assignments, and online tests. This format provides flexibility in timing but also maintains a high level of engagement with teachers and classmates. As a result, students get the convenience of distance learning along with the personal guidance and structure of classroom teaching.
AMU has designed its online programs to deliver not just academic content but also practical skills that improve employability. The courses are kept affordable to ensure that students from a variety of backgrounds can enrol. By focusing on interactive learning, recorded lectures, skill-building assignments, and digital tools, these programs help students develop technological literacy alongside their main subject knowledge. This dual focus prepares them better for the job market, where both domain expertise and digital skills are valued. Students also benefit from AMU’s long-standing reputation and its network of alumni and industry connections.
Yes. Even though the programs are online, students are expected to participate actively. Typically, a minimum of 75 percent attendance in live sessions, discussions, and assignments is required to be eligible for final examinations. This requirement ensures that students remain engaged and do not treat online learning as purely self-study. Regular participation also helps build discipline, improves understanding of the material, and gives students more opportunities to interact with teachers and peers.
All live classes in AMU’s online programs are recorded and uploaded to the learning platform. Students who cannot attend a session can log in later and watch the recording at their own convenience. This feature is especially useful for working professionals, students in different time zones, or those facing connectivity issues. It allows them to keep up with the course content without falling behind and also revisit complex topics whenever needed.
Most programs at AMU admit students through its own entrance tests or through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), depending on the course. While there is generally no strict upper age limit for applying, some professional programs may set specific age criteria. Students from any recognised school board in India or abroad can apply if they meet the subject and marks requirements listed for each course. This openness makes AMU accessible to a wide range of students and ensures that admissions are based primarily on merit.
