Cloud development has become a lucrative and high-demand domain in the United States of America (USA) in 2025, driven by an accelerated and continued shift towards cloud-based solutions across various industries. The primary reason for such growth is the need for businesses to adapt to phenomena like remote work, the inherent benefits of cloud computing, and the growing dependence of companies on artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics. Cloud development professionals also receive good salaries in the US. For example, cloud engineers receive a yearly average salary of $132,089.

This blog will discuss how candidates can become a cloud developer in the US in 2025 and also share the key elements that all the top cloud developer programs possess.

How to Become a Cloud Developer in 2025

Candidates who want to know how to become a cloud developer in 2025 must focus on building a strong foundation in the foundational concepts of cloud computing, as well as cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Azure. They must also participate in personal projects and/or internships to gain experience in this field and obtain cloud certifications that demonstrate their skills in the domain.

Foundational Knowledge

To get the best cloud computing jobs, candidates must have a clear understanding of the fundamentals of cloud computing such as virtualization, deployment models like public, hybrid, and private, and cloud service models such as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). They must also develop a solid understanding of networking concepts such as Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), standard network protocols, and Domain Name System (DNS). They must also familiarize themselves with the operating systems commonly used in cloud environments, such as Windows Server and Linux.

Scripting and Programming

Candidates seeking a high cloud developer salary must master at least one programming language, such as Python, JavaScript, or Java, that cloud developers commonly use. They should also learn scripting languages, such as PowerShell and Bash, so that they can automate tasks and manage their infrastructure effectively.

Cloud Platform Expertise

Students must choose at least one central cloud service provider platform, such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, and gain as much knowledge as possible about its tools and services to gain a better understanding of cloud developer roles and responsibilities. They should also work with the following cloud services such as the following:

  • Computer
  • Storage
  • Databases
  • Networking
  • Security

They should also learn how to use Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, such as CloudFormation and Terraform, to automate infrastructure management and provisioning.

DevOps Practices

Cloud developer courses these days focus heavily on helping students understand continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD) pipelines, enabling them to learn how to automate the software development lifecycle. They also need to be familiar with container orchestration platforms, such as Kubernetes, and container technologies, including Docker.

Essential Skills

Having excellent problem-solving skills is a crucial component of a successful career in cloud computing. So, cloud developers must be capable of understanding how to troubleshoot issues and find solutions in complex cloud environments. Aspiring cloud developers must also learn about best practices in cloud security and methods for securing data and applications in the cloud. Cloud developers must also be able to communicate effectively so that they can collaborate properly with various stakeholders, such as other developers and end-users.
